Applications of induction linac technology to heavy ion fusion

Description: Evaluation of the application of heavy ion accelerators to ignite d-t pellets in a thermonuclear reactor is discussed. Accelerator design requirements considered include transport-limited current, beam injection conditions, and pulse bunching and focusing characteristics. The desirability of resonant and non-resonant accelerating structures is comparatively examined. The required power system switch tubes are discussed. It is concluded that heavy ion accelerators could offer a promising solutio… more

Potential for use of high-temperature superconductors in fusion reactors

Description: The present rate of development of high-temperature superconductors (HTSs) is sufficiently rapid that there may be opportunities for their use in contemporary fusion devices such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). The most likely 1application is for delivering power to the superconducting magnets, especially in substituting for the current leads between the temperatures of 4 K and 77K. A second possible application of HTSs is as a liquid-nitrogen-cooled power bus, c… more

The International Coal Statistics Data Base program maintenance guide

Description: The International Coal Statistics Data Base (ICSD) is a microcomputer-based system which contains information related to international coal trade. This includes coal production, consumption, imports and exports information. The ICSD is a secondary data base, meaning that information contained therein is derived entirely from other primary sources. It uses dBase III+ and Lotus 1-2-3 to locate, report and display data. The system is used for analysis in preparing the Annual Prospects for World Co… more

Physics of antimatter-matter reactions for interstellar propulsion

Description: At the stage of the antiproton-nucleon annihilation chain of events relevant to propulsion the annihilation produces energetic charged pions and gamma rays. If annihilation occurs in a complex nucleus, protons, neutrons, and other nuclear fragments are also produced. The charge, number, and energy of the annihilation products are such that annihilation rocket engine concepts involving relatively low specific impulse (I/sub sp/ approx. = 1000 to 2000 s) and very high I/sub sp/ (3 x 10/sup 7/ s) … more

Status of thermal imaging technology as applied to conservation-update 1

Description: This document updates the 1978 report on the status of thermal imaging technology as applied to energy conservation in buildings. Thermal imaging technology is discussed in terms of airborne surveys, ground survey programs, and application needs such as standards development and lower cost equipment. Information on the various thermal imaging devices was obtained from manufacturer's standard product literature. Listings are provided of infrared projects of the DOE building diagnostics program, … more

Corrosion Behavior of Reactor Materials in Fluoride Salt Mixtures

Description: Molten fluoride salts, because of their radiation stability and ability to contain both Th and U, offer important advantages as high-temperature fuel solutions for nuclear reactors and as media suitable for nuclear fuel processing. Both applications have stimulated experimental and theoretical studies of the corrosion processes by which molten salt mixtures attack potential reactor materials. Corrosion experiments with fluoride salts which were conducted in support of the Molten-Salt Reactor E … more

Measurements and Changes on SM-1 Core II During Period October 1, 1961 to May 30, 1962

Description: Tests at the SM-1 reactor are reported for the period October 1, 1961, to May 31, 1962. Loading changes were made in SM-1 Core II during the scheduled semiannual shutdowns in October to November 1961 and April to May 1962. Core physics tests include control rod bank calibrations, bank position at several temperature and xenon poison conditions vs core changes and energy release, shutdown neutron source decay and startup channel testing, and critical rod positions for stuck rod configurations. Transient Temperature Distributions in a Thermally Orthotropic Plate With Non-Uniform Surface Heating

Description: ent temperature variation in a thermally orthotropic plate which is subjected to an arbitrary heating rate distribution along one face with all other surfaces being insulated. Dimensionless temperature histories and distributions determined from this solution are presented for the special, but representative, case of a linearly varying heating rate distribution on plates with varying degrees of thermal orthotropy. These results establish quantitatively the value of a material with high planar a… more

Investigations of CuInSe sub 2 Thin Films and Contacts

Description: This report describes research into electrical contacts for copper indium diselenide (CuInSe{sub 2}) polycrystalline thin films used for solar cell applications. Molybdenum contacts have historically been the most promising for heterojunction solar cells. This program studied contact stability by investigating thermally induced bilayer reactions between molybdenum and copper, indium, and selenium. Because selenization is widely used to fabricate CuInSe{sub 2} thin films for photovoltaic cells, … more

PHYSICS ANALYSIS OF THE JUGGERNAUT REACTOR

Description: The JUGGERNAUT is an intermediate-power research reactor designed and constructed as a supporting facility for chemistry and physics research. The design of this reactor is similar to that of the ARGONAUT, and those methods of evaluating the nuclear characteristics of the ARGONAUT which gave good agreement with experimental data were considered applicable to the analysis of the JUGGERNAUT. The analyses for both the JUGGERNAUT and the ARGONAUT were based on a modified two-group theory. The criti… more
