Strategic defense initiative

Description: The Engineering Technology Division has a leading role, including that of program management, in a major new programmatic thrust of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory that is in support of the national Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). It is appropriate for the Laboratory to become significantly involved in the program because several of the most promising SDI technologies are in areas for which ORNL (together with Y-12 and K-25) have strong capabilities and significant resources. The initial … more

Quality application to space nuclear power (SP-100)

Description: Westinghouse Hanford Company (WHC) was selected by DOE as the preferred site to install and conduct operational, performance, and reliability tests on the ground-based prototype of the space reactor. These tests will be conducted with the reactor in a large vacuum chamber to simulate the space environment. A containment vessel system from the decommissioned Plutonium Recycle Test Reactor will house the chamber and provide appropriate safeguards. The reactor will generate 2.5-MW thermal energy f… more

Power system requirements and selection for the space exploration initiative

Description: The Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) seeks to reestablish a US program of manned and unmanned space exploration. The President has called for a program which includes a space station element, a manned habitation of the moon, and a human exploration of Mars. The NASA Synthesis Group has developed four significantly different architectures for the SEI program. One key element of a space exploration effort is the power required to support the missions. The Power Speciality Team of the Synthesis … more
