Some Scoping Experiments for a Space Reactor

Description: Some scoping experiments were performed to evaluate fuel performance in a lithium heat pipe reactor operating at a nominal 1500K heat pipe temperature. Fuel-coolant and fuel-coolant-clad relationships showed that once a failed heat pipe occurs temperatures can rise high enough so that large concentrations of uranium can be transported by the vapor phase. Survey of Refractory Uranium Compounds

Description: Abstract: Chemical and physical data on twenty binary uranium compounds that may prove suitable for refractory nuclear fuels were assembled. The compounds were those with aluminum, boron, carbon, iron, nickel, nitrogen, silicon, or sulfur. Too little is known at this time about the compounds to evaluate any of them for fuel. The program is being extended in an effort to provide the needed data.

Thick-target neutron and. gamma. -ray yields induced by medium-energy proton and deuteron bombardments

Description: Stopping samples of Lucite, Al, Fe, and /sup 238/U (Fe, and /sup 238/U) were irradiated with 330 MeV deuterons (260 MeV protons). For each target, neutron energy spectra and prompt ..gamma..-ray yields were measured using the time-of-flight technique. Effects of relativity of RTEX in collisions of U sup q+ with light targets

Description: We have calculated the resonant transfer and excitation cross sections in collisions of U{sup q+} (q = 82, 89, 90) ion with H{sub 2}, He and C in impulse approximation using the multi-configuration Dirac-Fock method. Sampling SX-tank farm condensate

Description: In accordance with the policy that a centralized inventory shall be kept of all radioactive waste liquid discharged to ground, it is recommended that the volumes of condensate from the SX-farm, the dates or periods of discharge, and the activity densities of radioisotopes in the condensate discharged be determined by Separations Section and reported regularly to the Radiological Standards Unit. Thermo-physics technical note No. 37: SNAP- 10A, Stainless Steel-316 vessel wall ablation. Final report

Description: The altitudes and times of ablation have been determined for the SNAP-10A, SS-316 vessel wall reentering under various conditions.
