The Development of Uranium Carbide as a Nuclear Fuel: Final Report

Description: From introduction: This is the final report on uranium carbide studies sponsored by the United States Atomic Energy Commission and performed by United Nuclear Corporation at its New Haven Research Laboratories during the period from May 1959 to January 1964. The work was part of the Commission's Fuel Cycle Development Program aimed at lowering the cost of nuclear power by improving fuel cycle technology. At the inception of this program in 1959, some work was in progress on uranium carbide. Little was known of making a satisfactory fuel in quantity or of how it would perform either in-pile or out-of-pile. The United Nuclear program was designed with no specific reactor in mind and was aimed at furnishing information over a broad spectrum.

A Microdetermination of Uranium by Ferric Sulfate Titration

Description: Abstract: "Following nitrate removal by means of a three-stage hydrochloric acid digestion, uranium was reduced with chromous sulfate reagent. In an inert atmosphere, the quadrivalent uranium was titrated at 80-95[degrees] with standard ferric sulfate solution. The end point was obtained with a potentiometric cell including a platinum in-titrant reference electrode and a platinum indicator electrode. Application was made to various low leverl uranium solutions. For samples containing 1 - 12 milligrams or uranium, less than one percent error may be expected. Iron and chromium do not interfere."

Purification of Uranium Tetrachloride by Fractional Condensation

Description: "The effect of a single vacuum sublimation of contaminated uranium tetrachloride, with fractional condensation of the vapors, was investigated to determine whether a high degree of purity would result. It was found that this procedure was an excellent and simple method for obtaining exceedingly pure uranium tetrachloride."

Qualitative Observations of the Characteristics of TCl₅

Description: Summary: The controlled decomposition of the TCl₅ was carried out in an electric furnace at furnace temperatures varying from 114° to 550°C. The results indicate that chlorine evolution is noticeable when the TCl₅ temperature is about 75°C. The rate of reaction increases rapidly at a TCl₅ temperature of 175°C. Thus the possibility of TCl₅ existing at a very high temperature becomes uncertain. The TCl₄ prepared at the low temperatures (up to 300°) was obtained as a micro crystalline powder while those products allowed to heat at 400°-500° had a characteristic crystalline appearance.

The Preparation and Properties of Some Mixed Uranium Halides

Description: From abstract: "Compounds of tetravalent uranium containing two halogens have been prepared. Six combinations of the four halogens are possible, and at least one compound of each group was made. X-ray diffraction patterns were made in most cases and cooling curves of melts were made for the bromachlorides. The two general methods of preparation used were (a) reaction of a uranium trihalide with a halogen of greater atomic weight and (b) interaction of two tetrahalides."

Optimum Conditions for the "Hot Zone" Volatilization of TCl₄

Description: Abstract: "The data reported herein furnish a qualitative comparison of the rapidity of vaporization of TCl4 at various "hot zone" temperatures as well as a measure of the chlorine evolution attributed to its thermal decomposition. The presence of impurities in the TCl4 detracts from the significance of the reported chlorine evolution. The temperature recommended for rapid volatilization is 750 C at which TCl4 underwent thermal decomposition amounting to no more than 0.2% by weight."

Denitration Loss of Ruthenium from Uranyl Nitrate Beta Mounts

Description: Abstract: "During the preparation of beta-gamma mounts of uranyl nitrate it is possible to affect a denitration loss of approximately 80% of the ruthenium. By adding hydroxylamine sulfate and sulfuric acid, the ruthenium is stabilized and the denitration loss is eliminated. The standard determination of ruthenium by calculation, utilizing a differential counting technique has been found to be approximately the same as the standard denitration of radiochemical assays."
