Heated uranium tetrafluoride target system to release non-rare gas fission products for the TRISTAN isotope separator. [As replacement for uranyl stearate]

Description: Off-line experiments indicated that fluorides of As, Se, Br, Kr, Zr, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Sb, Te, I and Xe could be volatilized, but except for Br, Kr, I and Xe, none of these elements were observed after mass separation in the on-line experiments. The results of the on-line experiments indicated a very low level of hydride contamination at ambient temperature and consequently, uranium tetrafluoride replaced uranyl stearate as the primary gaseous fission product target. Possible reasons for the fail… more

Study of the hydrolysis of uranium hexafluoride by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy

Description: The reaction of uranium hexafluoride with water has been studied by using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Several different methods for accomplishing this task have been carried out. In addition, interpretatins of the results have been made. These interpretations have been based on literature values for the reactants and for compounds analogous to possible products. It was shown that classical matrix-isolation techniques proved to be unsatisfactory for studying this reaction. O… more

Uranyl Nitrate Flow Loop

Description: The objectives of the work discussed in this report were to: (1) develop a flow loop that would simulate the purified uranium-bearing aqueous stream exiting the solvent extraction process in a natural uranium conversion plant (NUCP); (2) develop a test plan that would simulate normal operation and disturbances that could be anticipated in an NUCP; (3) use the flow loop to test commercially available flowmeters for use as safeguards monitors; and (4) recommend a flowmeter for production-scale te… more

An Improved Aqueous Process for Zirconium Alloy Nuclear Reactor Fuels. Part I. Preliminary Laboratory Studies

Description: The expanding use of Zircaloy-clad Zr-enriched U alloy fuel suggested a need for higher capacity reprocessing facilities. The most ungent requirement is for continuous dissolution equpment to match the solvent extraction capacity already available at Idaho Chemical Processing Plant. Because of the rapid disaolution rates possible with aqueous HF on clean metal as well as on oxidized fuels, and subsequent flowsheet economics, it is the reagent of choice. Laboratory measurements and a survey of t… more

Chemistry of Gaseous Lower Halides of Uranium. Technical Progress Report, 1 September 1979-1 April 1980

Description: The gaseous uranium species UF, UF/sub 2/, UF/sub 3/, and UF/sub 4/ were generated in effusion cell beams by vaporization of UF/sub 4/(s) under reducing conditions, and they were identified and studied by mass spectrometry. From extensive second-law studies of reaction equilibria involving these species and several reaction partners used as reference standards, the individual bond dissociation energies and standard enthalpies of formation of the U-F species were derived. Reaction entropies deri… more

Formerly utilized MED/AEC sites remedial action program. Radiological survey of the E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Co. , Deepwater, New Jersey. Final report

Description: The results of a radiological survey of the E. I. Du Pont Company, Deepwater, New Jersey, are presented in this report. During the 1940's this site was used for development of a process for the conversion of uranium oxide to produce uranium tetrafluoride and small quantities of uranium metal. The survey included measurements of the following: residual alpha and beta--gamma contamination levels, both fixed and transferable, in the one remaining uranium tetrafluoride operations building; external… more

Molten Fluoride Mixtures as Possible Fission Reactor Fuels

Description: Molten mixtures of fluorides with UF/sub 4/ as a component have been used as combined fuel and primary heat transfer agent in experimental high-temperature reactors and have been proposed for use in breeders or converters of /sup 233/U from thorium. Such use places stringent and diverse demands upon the fluid fuel. A brief review of chemical behavior of molten fluorides is given to show some of their strengths and weaknesses for such service.

Solubility classification of airborne products from uranium ores and tailings piles. [Solubility parameters are based on airborne and seived ground dust samples]

Description: Airborne products generated at uranium mills were assigned solubility classifications for use in the ICRP Task Group Lung Model. No significant difference was seen between the dissolution behavior of airborne samples and sieved ground samples of the same product. If the product contained radionuclides that dissolved at different rates, composite classifications were assigned to show the solubility class of each component. If the dissolution data indicated that a radionuclide was present in two … more

The determination of UO/sub 2/ and UF/sub 4/ in fused fluoride salts

Description: The determination of uranium oxide solubilities in fused fluoride salts is important in the electrolytic preparation of uranium metal. This project was initiated to develop a method for the determination of UO/sub 2/ separately from UF/sub 4/ in UF/sub 4/-CaF/sub 2/-LiF fused salts. Previous methods used for the determination of UO/sub 2/ in fused fluoride salts involved inert gas fusions where oxygen was liberated as CO/sub 2/, and hydrofluorination where oxygen was released as H/sub 2/O; but … more

The Influence of Lubrication on the Compactability of Magnesium-Green Salt Blends for Bomb Reduction

Description: Lubrication of die surfaces with mineral oil or Dag 217 during final compacting of UF/sub 4/--Mg blends prevented seizing. Mineral oil application after every third press allowed 18 compacts before seizing became severe. Similar application of Dag 217 allowed 78 compacts. Mixing 0.33 wt.% Ceremul "C" with the powder allowed 40 compacts. Punch clearance had little effect on seizing. (T.R.H.)

Production of (Uranium) Tetrafluoride

Description: Production of tetrafluoride for the month of April was 49,400. New equipment installed late in March operated smoothly and the production was slightly over the rated capacity of the plant. Nickel ends were welded on to the steel reactor tubes to prevent corrosion at the cover joint and possible contamination of the product with iron. The nickel ends will also save considerable repair work on the tube ends. The magnesium trays for some of the reactors are beginning to crack at the sides from fre… more

Development of a Continuous Counter-Current High Efficiency Gas-Solids Contactor

Description: Experimental conversions of UO/sub 3/ to UO /sub 2/ to UF/sub 4/ in batch fluidized bed pilot-scale contactor have demonstrated that conversion rates approaching those predicted from basic kinetic data are attainable. Further studies with fluidized beds in columns incorporating a very slight taper show that solids mixing with attendant product contamination is reduced by a factor of ten as a direct result of the taper. Experiments with tapered fluidlized beds made the design of continuous (as o… more

PRELIMINARY REPORT ON 2% U$sup 235$-ENRICHED UF$sub 4$-C$sub 25$H$sub 52$ CRITICAL ASSEMBLIES

Description: A series of critical experiments with blocks of 2% U/sup 235/--enriched UF/sub 4/-C/sub 25/sub 5/H/sub 52/ was initiated at the ORN L Critical Experiments Facility. Thus far assemblies with H:U/sup 235/ atomic ratios of 195 and 294 were built in parallelepipedal and simulated cylindrical geometries, both reflected and unreflected. From the results the minimum critical masses for reflected spheres were determined to be 16.3 and 8.5 kg of U/sup 235/ for fuel mixtures with H:U atomic ratios of 195… more
