Detection of Distant Explosions by Seismic Measurements in Deep Boreholes

Description: Report presenting the results of a program of research on the depth-well method of obtaining improved signal-to-noise ratios in seismic recordings. Deposition Of Thermal Energy By Nuclear Explosives

Description: A fraction of the energy released by the underground detonation of nuclear explosives is locally deposited as residual thermal energy. An accurate prediction of this usable fraction of the energy released is necessary to evaluate the feasibility of several of the proposed projects in the Plowshare Program. Description: Abstract. Three groups of 100 foot holes were drilled vertically downward from the floor of U 12e main tunnel and U 123.03 drift at the Nevada Test Site. Project Cowboy : Physical Properties of Salt Samples

Description: The purpose of Project Cowboy was to investigate the seismic signals generated by chemical explosions in underground cavities, with particular emphasis on the possibility of decoupling of these signals from the surrounding media. The project site was the Carey Salt Company salt mine, located approximately five miles west of Winnfield, Louisiana. The tests were run during fiscal year 1960. Project Cowboy : Use of Large Cavities to Reduce Seismic Waves From Underground Explosions

Description: This technical report analyzes an experiment designed to test the theory of seismic decoupling of underground explosives proposed by Latter, LeLevier, Martinelli, and McMillan [1959]. The theory calculated the amplitude of a 1.7-kiloton nuclear explosive in a hole in salt and compares it to the measured value of the 1.7-kt Rainier shot in tuff at the same distance. Operation Pre-Gnome: Seismic Data from Natural Phenomena and High-Explosive Tests Near Carlsbad, New Mexico

Description: Formulas derived from earlier work satisfactorily predicted low frequency ground effects resulting from the Pre-Gnome explosions, but they not predict high accelerations associated with high frequency ground waves.
