U.S. Tree Planting for Carbon Sequestration

Description: This report briefly discusses one of the widely discussed options for domestic carbon dioxide offsets: tree planting. Two terms are generally used for tree planting: reforestation, for planting trees in areas recently cleared of forest through timber harvesting or natural disaster; and afforestation, for planting trees on sites that have long been cleared of forests, such as crop, pasture, and brush lands.

The Use of Tree Shelters in Restoring Forest Species to a Floodplain Delta: 5 Year Results

Description: The use of tree shelters to enhance survival and growth of bald cypress, water tupelo, green ash, and black tupelo were evaluated in the riparian and swamp forest of the Pen Branch delta. Survival at the end of the five years ranged from 67% to 100% for seedlings in shelters and 2% to 90% for those in the open. Mortality resulted primarily from beavers. Height growth was only improved for seedlings in shelters for the first few years.

Effects of Willow Overstory on Planted Seedlings in a Bottomland Restoration

Description: Various treatments were applied to control overstory willow in the riparian area of the Pen Branch system in order to determine the effects of competition control on seedling survival and growth. Four species, bald cypress, water tupelo, green ash, and swamp chestnut oak, were planted under four levels of willow canopy (intact, 60% removal, 100% removal with herbicide, 100% with mechanical).
