Classical Simulations of the Drift of Magnetobound States of Positronium

Description: The production and control of antihydrogen at very low temperatures provided a key tool to test the validity for the antimaterial of the fundamental principles of the interactions of nature such as the weak principle of equivalence (WEP), and CPT symmetry (Charge, Parity, and Time reversal). The work presented in this dissertation studies the collisions of electrons and positrons in strong magnetic fields that generate magnetobound positronium (positron-electron system temporarily bound due to … more

Thermal Transport Modeling in Three-Dimensional Pillared-Graphene Structures for Efficient Heat Removal

Description: Pillared-graphene structure (PGS) is a novel three-dimensional structure consists of parallel graphene sheets that are separated by carbon nanotube (CNT) pillars that is proposed for efficient thermal management of electronics. For microscale simulations, finite element analyses were carried out by imposing a heat flux on several PGS configurations using a Gaussian pulse. The temperature gradient and distribution in the structures was evaluated to determine the optimum design for heat transfer.… more

Identification and Characterization of a Mutation Causing Stunted Growth in Arabidopsis that is Linked to Phosphate Perception

Description: Plant yield is an agronomic trait dependent on the transport of photosynthate from mature source leaves to sink tissues. Manipulating phloem transport may lead to increased yield, however in a previous study, Arabidopsis thaliana overexpressing sucrose transporter AtSUC2 in the phloem resulted in stunted growth and an apparent P-deficiency. In the course of further characterizing the phenotype and identifying the causative mutation, this research included 1) reverse genetics to test genes hypot… more

The Long-Term Effects of Developmental Hypoxia on Cardiac Mitochondrial Function in Snapping Turtles

Description: This article investigates the long-term effects of developmental hypoxia on mitochondrial function in a species that regularly encounters hypoxia during development. Findings speculate that adjustments might improve mitochondrial hypoxia tolerance, which would be beneficial for turtles during breath-hold diving and overwintering in anoxic environments.

The Influence of Aortic Valve Hemodynamics and LVAD on bio-transport processes in Calcific Aortic Valve Disease

Description: Data management plan for the grant "The Influence of Aortic Valve Hemodynamics and LVAD on bio-transport processes in Calcific Aortic Valve Disease." One of the most common valvular heart diseases is the development of calcific aortic valve (CAV). The goal of this research is to understand the transport and near-wall accumulation of Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), which play a key role in the CAV development, with and without altered transvalvular pressure gradient due to LVADs. This will be ach… more

Relaxation Time Approximations in PAOFLOW 2.0

Description: Electronic transport properties have been used to classify and characterize materials and describe their functionality. Recent surge in computational power has enabled computational modelling and accelerated theoretical studies to complement and accelerate experimental discovery of novel materials. This work looks at methods for theoretical calculations of electronic transport properties and addresses the limitations of a common approximation in the calculation of these properties, namely, the … more

Dominant Role of Hole Transport Pathway in Achieving Record High Photoconductivity in Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks

Description: Article describes how metal-organic frameworks with mobile charges have attracted significant attention due to their potential application in photoelectric devices, chemical resistance sensors, and catalysis. The authors report the mechanisms of photoinduced charge transport and electron dynamics in the conductive 2D M−HHTP MOFs and their correlation with photoconductivity using the combination of time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy, optical transient absorption spectroscopy, X-ray transient a… more

Transport of Proton, Hydrogen and Alpha Particles through Atomic Hydrogen Environment

Description: Using multiple theoretical methods, comprehensive calculations are performed to create a new and more comprehensive data set for elastic scattering and related transport cross sections for collisions of (H$^+$ + H), (H + H) and (He$^{2+}$ + H) in the center-of-mass energy frame. In proton-atomic hydrogen collisions, we have significantly updated and extended previous work of elastic scattering, charge transfer and related transport integral and differential cross sections in the center-of-mass … more
