Modulated molecular beam mass spectrometric studies of the high temperature pyrolysis of hydrocarbons

Description: The pyrolysis products of benzene and toluene were studied as functions of temperature (up to 2000/sup 0/C) and pressure. Above 1400/sup 0/C, most of the larger species are unstable; above 1700/sup 0/C, no species heavier than C/sub 6/H/sub 6/ are observed at any pressure. Above 1500/sup 0/C and at higher pressures, the products are dominated by species containing even numbers of carbon atoms (C/sub 2/ to C/sub 12/). Description: The investigation of the sorption of solvent vapor into high volatile bituminous coal at temperatures up to 175/sup 0/C indicates that the solvent weight gain involves a complex coupling of several phenomena including adsorption, sorption into the coal matrix, capillary condensation and extraction into the condensed vapor phase. Reactions of the toluene-insoluble, pyridine-soluble fraction of Illinois No. 6 coal

Description: Illinois No. 6 coal was extracted with pyridine at 100/sup 0/ and the toluene-insoluble, pyridine-soluble (TIPS) fraction of the extract was used as a model for the 84% of insoluble coal. Various TIPS fractions had number-average molecular weights (anti M/sub n/) in pyridine of 980 to 1380 but were insoluble or only partly soluble in most other solvents.
