Nucleus-nucleus Bremsstrahlung from scattering angle selected Cl-Sn collisions

Description: Continuum X rays above the K lines of Sn were measured at 90 and 0/sup 0/ angle relative to the incident beam direction in coincidence with C1 projectiles scattered at very large laboratory angles between 8 and 164/sup 0/. By varying the isotope mass of the projectile ions (/sup 35/Cl and /sup 37/Cl) and of the target atoms (/sup 112/Sn and /sup 118/Sn) the radiation at scattering angles >10/sup 0/ could be clearly identified as Bremsstrahlung from the elementary scattering process of the two n… more

Reaction studies near the barrier for medium heavy systems: Ni + Sn

Description: Cross sections for elastic and inelastic scattering, single- and multi-nucleon transfer, fusion followed by particle evaporation leaving an evaporation residue, and fusion followed by fission have been measured for /sup 58/ /sup 64/Ni beams incident on even Sn targets at energies from below to above the Coulomb barrier. The Ni beams were provided by the Argonne Superconducting Linac. The aim of these measurements is a comprehensive study of the reaction systematics in a medium-heavy collision s… more

Fusion and fission in heavy systems near the barrier

Description: Fusion and fission reactions have been studied near the barrier for /sup 58/ /sup 64/Ni beams incident on all even Sn targets. Excitation functions have been measured over an energy range from well below to approx. 1.4 times the fusion barrier. We discuss the sub-barrier fusion yields, the observed fission behavior in comparison to theoretical model predictions and the possible influences of compound-nucleus structure effects at these energies near the barrier. 11 references.

Stellar Nucleosynthesis and the 24-keV Neutron Capture Cross Sections of Some Heavy Nuclei

Description: The neutron capture cross sections of /sup 112/Sn, /sup 130/Ba, /sup 146/Nd, /sup 148/Nd, /sup 186/W, /sup 190/Os, and /sup 192/Os at 24 keV neutron energy were measured with respect to /sup 197/Au by activation in a 24 keV neutron beam at the Brookhaven High Flux Beam Reactor. The reliability of this technique was verified by remeasuring the cross section of /sup 186/W and comparing it to previous measurements. This continuing series of measurements will provide a more reliable data base for n… more

Dynamic moments of inertia in Xe, Cs and Ba nuclei

Description: The ..gamma..-rays following the reactions induced by /sup 12/C ions on /sup 115/In, /sup 112/,/sup 117/,/sup 122/Sn and /sup 123/Sb targets have been investigated using six NaI(Tl) detectors in a two-dimensional arrangement. The collective moment of inertia I(/sup 2/) /sub band/ of /sup 118/,/sup 122/Xe, /sup 123/Cs and /sup 128/,/sup 130/Ba have been extracted from the energy-correlation spectra. The behaviour of these nuclei and the observed differences are interpreted in terms of high-spin … more

Influence of quasi-elastic channels on fusion

Description: Experiments that measure the strength of different transfer reactions in heavy reaction systems at energies in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier are discussed. A short discussion is given of experimental techniques that are available in this field and their advantages and shortfalls. The main features of the transfer reactions are summarized. Questions concerning the system dependence and energy dependence of the strongest reaction channels are addressed. A systematic picture of the strength … more
