Electroplates on Thorium

Description: Abstract: "The protection of thorium in hot water was studied. Copper electrocladding on thorium offers promising protection against hot water. The corrosion of thorium in 95 C water was reduced appreciably by a thorium phosphate film. The results of this abbreviated investigation offer a basis for the development of a method of protecting thorium at elevated temperatures in corrosive media."

A Conceptual Design of a Thorium-Uranium (233) Power Breeder Reactor

Description: From abstract: A conceptual design study has been performed for a sodium cooled, graphite moderated, thermal power-breeder reactor utilizing the Thorium-Uranium 233 breeding cycle. Several aspects of the design of the system are considered but no attempt has been made to supply all the details. It appears that the design presented is feasible and will allow the production of economic power as well as full utilization of thorium resources.

[Wyoming Uranium Evaluation] Volume 3: Uranium Assessment for the Precambrian Pebble Conglomerates in Southeastern Wyoming

Description: From introduction: The Geology Department of the University of Wyoming was asked to make a geostatistical assessment of the uranium endowment of these deposits as a part of the World Class core drilling operations of the Bendix Field Engineering Corporation. This study was to include (a) the development of optimum geostatistical methodology for assessing uranium endowment in areas of close drill control (1 mile or less centers) as well as in areas of distant drill control (5 mile centers or more), (.b) the implementation of this methodology in assessing the uranium resources of the pebble conglomerates in southeastern Wyoming, and (c) the determination of the overall geostatistical uncertainty of the resource estimates. In addition, methods were to be studied for projecting the assessments into new areas, including prediction of estimate uncertainty.

Corrosion of thorium and uranium during long-term storage

Description: From introduction: "The over-all objective of the present study was to determine the nature and extent of the present study was to determine the nature and extent of the corrosion of these materials under a variety of such storage conditions and to determine the ability of several potential protective coatings to retard this corrosion."

The crystal structure of thorium nitrate

Description: From introduction: "Studies were made of single crystals of thorium nitrate hydrate which we had available in this laboratory and from these we were able to determine the unit cell and find the thorium positions. These crystals contain on the order of six water molecules per thorium atom, but the exact composition is in some doubt."

Some Studies of the Products of the High-Energy Fission Process

Description: Abstract: "The energy-dependence of the formation cross section of certain nuclides formed in fission of uranium and thorium has been studied. Excitation functions in the hundred-Mev region are given for Ni66, Zr97, Ag111, Ba131, and Ba139. Protons, deuterons, and alpha particles from the Berkeley 184-inch frequency modulated synchro-cyclotron were used to induce the activities."

Evaluation and Consolidation of Electrolytic Thorium

Description: Abstract: "Sound, fabricable ingots of thorium were produced by triple are melting of electrolytic thorium. Consumable electrodes were fabricated by tack welding of cold-pressed and vacuum-sintered bars of the granular thorium electrodeposited from a molten-salt bath. The hydrogen content of the electrodeposited material was reduced from 80 to 4 ppm by vacuum sintering at 1250 C at pressures below 1 x 10-(-3) mm of mercury. Both sodium and chlorine content were reduced during melting; sodium from 250 to 25 ppm and chlorine from 1000 to 30 ppm. Oxygen and HCl acid-insoluble contents increased during sintering and melting. Oxygen content increased from 0.35 to 0.50 w/o and HCl acid-insoluble content from 0.8 to 4.0 w/o. A starlike includion revealed by metallographic examination of the as-cast thorium was identified as ThO2."
