Description: The results of analyses of the airborne gamma radiation and total magnetic field survey flown for the region identified as the San Angelo National Topographic Map NH14-1 are presented. Calculated and experimental studies of nonequilibrium solvent extraction of uranium-thorium and uranium-zirconium

Description: The nonequilibrium simultaneous transfer of ions in solvent extraction has been examined experimentally and these results have been compared with the calculated behavior determined using transfer rate constants. In the Th-U system when transferring from 2 M HNO/sub 3/ into 30% tributyl phosphate (TBP) in normal hydrocarbon diluent (NPH), the thorium approaches equilibrium faster than uranium over much of the transfer region. Auger study of surface carbon and oxygen on thorium following ion bombardment

Description: The composition of a thorium metal surface has been monitored using Auger electron spectroscopy following Ar/sup +/ bombardment at different temperatures. After extended Ar/sup +/ bombardment, enough contaminated overlayers were removed to expose a surface region containing only thorium, bulk impurities, and imbedded argon. Spectrophotometric determination of uranium(IV) with Arsenazo III

Description: A spectrophotometric procedure was developed for determining U(IV) in the presence of U(VI) by forming a colored complex with Arsenazo III in 4M HCl. The results compare satisfactorily with U(IV) determinations by ceric titration. Total uranium can be determined after reduction of U(VI) with metallic zinc. The concentration range for the absorbance cell solution is 0 to 2 ..mu..g U(IV)/mL. Other tetravalent ions, such as thorium, zirconium, hafnium, plutonium, and neptunium, will interfere.

Uranium production in thorium/denatured uranium fueled PWRs

Description: Uranium-232 buildup in a thorium/denatured uranium fueled pressurized water reactor, PWR(Th), was studied using a modified version of the spectrum-dependent zero dimensional depletion code, LEOPARD. Determination of thorium and uranium at the nanogram per gram level in semiconductor potting plastics by neutron activation analysis

Description: A method was developed to determine thorium and uranium in semiconductor potting plastics. The method is based on neutron activation and subsequent radiochemical separation to isolate and permit measurement of the induced /sup 233/Pa and /sup 239/Np. Influence of safeguards and fire protection on criticality safety

Description: There are several positive influences of safeguards and fire protection on criticality safety. Experts in each discipline must be aware of regulations and requirements of the others and work together to ensure a fault-tree design. EG and G Idaho, Inc., routinely uses an Occupancy-Use Readiness Manual to consider all aspects of criticality safety, fire protection, and safeguards. The use of the analytical tree is described.

Description: An Active Well Coincidence Counter has been developed to assay uranium fuel material in field inspection applications. Dual mechanism bifunctional polymers for the complexation of lanthanides and actinides. [Phosphinic resins]

Description: Phosphinic acid ion exchange/redox resins are synthesized by the reaction between polystyrene beads and phosphorus trichloride followed by base hydrolysis. The reaction requires a temperature of 73/sup 0/C for full functionalization to occur.
