Production of Pebble-Type Fuel Elements

Description: A capillary-drop method of producing spherical shapes of brittle materials less than 0.l00 inch in diameter was developed. It appears to be a feasible means for producing large numbers of pebble-tyne fuel element cores. Coating of pebble-type fuel element cores by the coating-pan technique, though not adequately developed, showed promise. (auth)

FUSED SALT HEAT TRANSFER. PART II. FORCED CONVECTION HEAT TRANSFER IN CIRCULAR TUBES CONTAINING NaF-Kf-LiF EUTECTIC

Description: Heat transfer coefficients were determined for the eutectic mixture LiF- KF-NaF (Flinak) flowing in forced convection through circular tubes. Heat, electrically generated in the tube wall was transferred uniformly to the fluid during passage through small-diameter tubes of nickel, Inconel, and 316 stainless steel. The variables involved: Reynolds modulus (N/sub R//sub e/), 2300 to 9500; Prandtl modulus (N/sub P//sub r/, 1.6 to 4.0; average fluid temperatures, 980 to 1370 deg F; and heat flux, 9… more

A Pulsed Eddy Current Technique for Measuring Clad Thickness. Metallurgy Program 12.1.2

Description: A pulsed eddy current technique for measuring the cladding thicknesses of reactor fuel elements is described. Special emphasis has been put on the measurement of zirconium cladding. In this technique an electromagnetic field is applied at the surface of the clad fuel element by means of a probe coil. Whenever the waves enco nter a sudden discontinuity, such as an interface,''echoes'' are produced. The same probe coil is used for sending the electromagnetic radiation and receiving the echces. Absolute Thermal Neutron Determination. Part 2. Absolute Beta Counting of Indium Foils

Description: Correction factors for the effect of thickness on the selfscattering, self-absorption, and backscattering of beta particles from indium foils were determined for irradiated foils of 0.03 to 100 mg/cm/sup 2/. The data were corrected for the activity produced by epithermal neutrons, self-shielding of thermal neutrons by the foil during irradiation, the backscatter from the foil support, and the contributions of gamma and x rays to the counting rate. The multiple beta spectra of indium produced a … more

Aluminum Canning of Nickel-Plated, Hanford Four-Inch Uranium Fuel Slugs by Hot-Pressing

Description: Conditions of time, temperature, and pressure for hotpress bonding of aluminum-nickel and uranium-nickel disks were determined experimentally. A process for jacketing Hanford four-inch slugs, coated with nonporous nickel electroplates, in aluminum cans by cold-sizing and hot-pressing was developed and conditions of time, temperature, and pressure required for the actual canning process were determined.
