Magnetic reconnection at stressed x-type neutral points

Description: The reconnection and relaxation of two-dimensional stressed (non-potential) x-type neutral point magnetic fields are studied via solution of the nonlinear resistive 2-D MHD equations and by analytical solution of the linear eigenvalue problem. The linear dispersion relation was generalized for azimuthally nonsymmetric perturbations, and have found that for modes with azimuthal mode numbers m > 0, the relaxation can occur at a rate faster than that for n = m = 0, where n is the radial quantum'' … more

The use of iron shims to reduce the toroidal field ripple in Tokamaks

Description: A study was performed to investigate the use of laminated ferromagnetic material, iron shims, to reduce the toroidal field, TF, ripple in Tokamaks. Fixed geometry shims can reduce the TF ripple and will behave linearly for Low Field Tokamaks with central fields under 2 Tesla. For High Field Tokamaks with central fields under 6 Tesla, fixed geometry shims can reduce the TF ripple but will have some non-linear behavior. Variable geometry shims can reduce the field ripple significantly with comple… more

Computational methods for stellerator configurations

Description: This project consists of two parallel objectives. On the one hand, computational techniques for three dimensional magnetic confinement configurations were developed or refined and on the other hand, this new techniques were applied to the solution of practical fusion energy problems or the techniques themselves were transferred to other fusion researcher for practical use in the field.

Magnetic surfaces in a steady-state tokamak

Description: We study a toroidal plasma in a tokamak with externally given toroidal and poloidal magnetic fields as well as self-consistently interacting internal currents. The unperturbed magnetic surfaces are described by the well-known nonlinear standard map.'' When the magnetic field is allowed to carry an internal current, the self-interaction of these currents disturbs the integrity of the magnetic surfaces. We carry out a computational study of the effects of the interacting internal current filament… more

An Analytic Determination of Beta Poloidal and Internal Inductance in an Elongated Tokamak From Magnetic Probe Measurements

Description: Analytic calculations of the magnetic fields available to magnetic diagnostics are performed for tokamaks with circular and elliptical cross sections. The explicit dependence of the magnetic fields on the poloidal beta and internal inductances is sought. For tokamaks with circular cross sections, Shafranov's results are reproduced and extended. To first order in the inverse aspect ratio expansion of the magnetic fields, only a specific combination of beta poloidal and internal inductance is fou… more

Limits on m = 2, n = 1 error field induced locked mode instability in TPX with typical sources of poloidal field coil error field and a prototype correction coil, C-coil''

Description: Irregularities in the winding or alignment of poloidal or toroidal magnetic field coils in tokamaks produce resonant low m, n = 1 static error fields. Otherwise stable discharges can become nonlinearly unstable, and locked modes can occur with subsequent disruption when subjected to modest m = 2, n = 1 external perturbations. Using both theory and the results of error field/locked mode experiments on DIII-D and other tokamaks, the critical m = 2, n = 1 applied error field for locked mode instab… more

Magnet operating experience review for fusion applications

Description: This report presents a review of magnet operating experiences for normal-conducting and superconducting magnets from fusion, particle accelerator, medical technology, and magnetohydrodynamics research areas. Safety relevant magnet operating experiences are presented to provide feedback on field performance of existing designs and to point out the operational safety concerns. Quantitative estimates of magnet component failure rates and accident event frequencies are also presented, based on fiel… more
