Characterization of carbonaceous materials using extraction with supercritical pentane

Description: The use of carbonaceous adsorbents is limited by irreversible adsorption of some compounds so the use of supercritical pentane as an extracting solvent was examined. Carbon black appeared to be broken down slowly, but continuously, by the penane. Anaerobic bioprocessing of low-rank coals

Description: The overall goal of this project is to find biological methods to remove carboxylic functionalities from low-rank coals and to assess the properties of the modified coal towards coal liquefaction. Development of a correlation between slurry oil composition and process performance. Topical report 1. Analyses of slurry recycle oils from H-Coal PDU Run 5

Description: Daily samples of the slurry recycle oil from the 30-day H-Coal PDU Run 5 (Syncrude mode, Illinois 6 coal) were analyzed by /sup 1/H-NMR spectroscopy GS/MS, and liquid chromatographic techniques. The recycle oils composition in PDU Run 5 reached an initial steady-state at about day 12, but this was upset when the hydrogen partial pressure was increased on day 20. Well installation and boring report for the proposed SRC-1 facility at Newman, Kentucky

Description: Dames and Moore conducted a geohydrologic investigation at the proposed Solvent-Refined Coal (SRC-I) Demonstration Plant Site. Task 1 involved drilling 14 borings to aid in further determining the location and extent of a clay body known to lie along the floodplain at the southern edge of the site. Task 2 included installation of 13 stainless steel groundwater observation wells throughout the site in order to expand the groundwater flow information provided by 10 existing wells.

Systems studies of coal-conversion processes using a reference simulator. Final report, March 12, 1976-August 12, 1979

Description: Methodology and general purpose software were developed which do allow computer-aided design and analysis of large scale coal conversion processes. The LINBAL package for larger scale balance calculations was demonstrated to be quick and efficient in solving problems involving over 100 streams, 20 species, and 80 or more flowsheet units. Chemical and biological effects of heavy distillate recycle in the SRC-II process

Description: Recent work from the Merriam Laboratory continuous coal liquefaction units shows that heavy distillate from the SRC-II process can be recycled to extinction, and hence a distillate product boiling entirely below 310/sup 0/C (590/sup 0/F) (or other selected boiling points) is feasible.
