Investigation of nuclei near N = 82 and Z = 64 VIA radioactive decay of high-spin isomers

Description: An island of very high spin isomers was found recently in neutron-deficient Gd-Lu nuclei near the N = 82 closed shell in (H.I.,xn) measurements. This exciting discovery has led to a large number of experiments trying to identify the structures of these isomers and the nuclei in which they occur. These attempts have been helped in many instances by available spectroscopic information at low excitation energies. A systematic investigation of the low-lying structure of nuclei near N = 82 and Z gre… more

A search for long-lived radionuclides produced by fast-neutron irradiations of copper, silver, europium, terbium, and hafnium

Description: Identical sample packets, each containing samples of elemental copper, silver, europium, terbium, and hafnium, as well as titanium, iron and nickel as dosimeters, have been irradiated in three distinct accelerator neutron fields as part of an interlaboratory research collaboration to search for the production of long-lived radionuclides for fusion waste disposal applications. This paper is a progress report on this project. To date, we have detected the following activities, and have obtained p… more

Radioactivities with 146 less than or equal toA less than or equal to152 investigated at the OASIS facility: Evidence for /sup 147/Tm. beta. -decay

Description: Progress is reported for a collaborative program, involving researchers from the Lawrence Berkeley and Oak Ridge National Laboratories, which has now been in progress at the SuperHILAC OASIS on-line facility for more than two years. In these investigations properties of short lived nuclei near the N = 82 neutron shell have been studied, their decays being assayed with particle, gamma ray, x ray, and positron detectors. Nuclides investigated so far were produced in /sup 58/Ni bombardments of /su… more

Coordination chemistry of several radius-sensitive complexones and applications to lanthanide-actinide separations

Description: The relationships between the lanthanide complex formation equilibria and the lanthanide-actinide separation application of three radius sensitive ligands have been studied. The consecutive stepwise formation constants of the 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 chelate species formed by the interaction of DHDMB and the tripositive lanthanides and yttrium were determined potentiometrically at 0.1 M ionic strength and 25/sup 0/C. Results indicate that three different coordination modes, one tridentate and two bide… more

Possible oblate rotational bands in N=84 nuclides

Description: Strong-coupling rotational bands built on 11/sup -/ (33/2/sup +/ for odd-A) states with configuration ..nu..(i/sub 13/2/, h/sub 9/2/) (..pi..(h/sub 11/2/) ..nu..(i/sub 13/2/, h/sub 9/2/) are off-A) were identified in N=84 nuclei with Z less than or equal to 65. These are the first levels observed in this region with proven oblate deformation. 3 figures.

Semiempirical shell model calculation in the N = 82, Z = 64 region

Description: The aim of the present work was to determine a consistent set of single-particle energies and two-body interaction matrix elements that are relevant in the region around /sup 146/Gd nucleus. The resulting values were used to calculate the medium- and high-spin states that are fed by the decay of the 550 ns isomer in /sup 147/Gd. 5 refs., 1 fig., 6 tabs.

Reaction cross-section calculations using new experimental and theoretical level structure data for deformed nuclei

Description: A technique for modeling level structures of odd-odd nuclei has been used to construct sets of discrete states with energies in the range 0 to 1.5 MeV for several nuclei in the rare-earth and actinide regions. The accuracy of the modeling technique was determined by comparison with experimental data. Examination was made of what effect the use of these new, more complete sets of discrete states has on the calculation of level densities, total reaction cross sections, and isomer ratios. 9 refs.

Nuclear orientation studies of rare-earth metals

Description: The angular distributions of gamma rays from /sup 166m/Ho and /sup 160/Tb aligned at low temperatures in, respectively, Ho metal and Tb metal have been measured. Large hyperfine splittings, expected for the rare earths, have been deduced from the temperature dependence of the gamma-ray anisotropies. Both samples show a macroscopic magnetic anisotropy that is not consistent with an interpretation in terms of a randomly oriented polycrystalline structure.

Particle decay studies at or near closed shells

Description: We summarize briefly two sets of investigations. In the first one ..cap alpha..-decay rates of neutron-deficient even-even Pb isotopes were studied by using the UNISOR separator on-line at the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility. These data indicate that midway between N = 82 and N = 126, the Z = 82 shell gap may not exist. The second investigation, carried out at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory 88-Inch Cyclotron and SuperHILAC, has dealt with the delayed-proton decays of the N = 81 precurso… more

Beta-delayed proton activities: /sup 147/Dy and /sup 149/Er

Description: The present paper discusses mainly the ..beta..-delayed proton spectra of /sup 147/Dy and of the hitherto unknown isotope, /sup 149/Er. However, following the submittal of the abstract for this conference we have now observed delayed protons following the decay of /sup 145/Dy. Additionally, we have identified a 0.5-s delayed-proton emitter and tentatively assign it to the new isotope, /sup 151/Yb.

Decay of deformed and superdeformed nuclei formed in heavy ion reactions

Description: The importance of considering the deformation of nuclei at high angular momenta in computing transmission coefficients for their decay is examined. Deformations based on the rotating liquid drop model were used to generate transmission coefficients versus compound nucleus angular momentum. The results were then used in a Hauser-Feshbach code that included fission competition to assess the ultimate importance of deformation-modified transmission coefficients. It was found that for a broad range … more

An improvement in the value of the energy of the first excited state in [sup 229]Th

Description: It has been known for many years that the first excited state of [sup 229]Th lies close to the ground state. Originally this energy was given as < 0.1 keV; later, the authors reported a value of [minus]1 [plus minus] 4 eV. Since the existence of a nuclear state at this very low energy is of considerable interest, measurements of its energy, half-life and modes of excitation and deexcitation are important. In an attempt to improve the level energy, the authors have measured over 175 [gamma]-ray … more
