Tuning the temperature range of superelastic Ni-Ti alloys for elastocaloric cooling via thermal processing

Description: Article describes how caloric cooling enlisting solid-state refrigerants is potentially a promising eco-friendly alternative to conventional cooling based on vapor compression. Here, the authors have explored tuning the operation temperature range of Ni50.8Ti49.2 for elastocaloric cooling. In particular, they have studied the effect of thermal treatments (a.k.a. aging) on the transformation temperature, superelasticity, and elastocaloric effects of Ni50.8Ti49.2 shape memory alloy tubes.

Next Generation Friction Stir Welding Tools for High Temperature Materials

Description: The historical success of friction stir welding (FSW) on materials such as aluminum and magnesium alloys is associated with the absence of melting and solidification during the solid-state process. However, commercial adoption of FSW on steels and other non-ferrous high-strength, high-temperature materials such as nickel-base and titanium-base alloys is limited due to the high costs associated with the process. In this dissertation, the feasibility of using an FSW approach to fabricate certain … more

An Investigation of Scaling of Zirconium at Elevated Temperatures : Quarterly Status Report No. 10; Sept. 2, 1955 to Dec. 2, 1955

Description: As previously reported, zirconium undergoes large dimensional increases after scaling in air in a critical temperature range, 700 degree-1050 degree C. This finding was observed with specimens of a constant thickness (0;062 in.) To study the thickness effect, a number of specimens ranging in thickness from 0.020 to 0.200 in. were scaled in air at a temperature (900 degree C) where the growth is a maximum for a given time. Both cold rolled iodine sheet and forged iodide bar stock were used. to d… more

Investigation of Room Temperature Sputtering and Laser Annealing of Chalcogen Rich TMDs for Opto-Electronics

Description: Chalcogen-rich transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) magnetron sputtering targets were custom manufactured via ball milling and sintering in the interest of depositing p-type chalcogen-rich films. Room temperature radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering produced ultra-thin amorphous precursor of WSx and MoSx (where x is between 2-3) on several different substrates. The influence of working pressure on the MoS3 content of the amorphous films was explored with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (… more

Artificial Neural Network Based Thermal Conductivity Prediction of Propylene Glycol Solutions with Real Time Heat Propagation Approach

Description: Machine learning is fast growing field as it can be applied to solve a large amount of problems. One large subsection of machine learning are artificial neural networks (ANN), these work on pattern recognition and can be trained with data sets of known solutions. The objective of this thesis is to discuss the creation of an ANN capable of classifying differences in propylene glycol concentrations, up to 10%. Utilizing a micro pipette thermal sensor (MTS) it is possible to measure the heat propa… more

Temperature Change and Its Consequences for the Physiology of the Eurythermic Sheepshead Minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus)

Description: The estuarine sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus) is the most eurythermic fish species, with a thermal tolerance window between 0.6°C and 45.1°C. However, little is known about the physiological mechanisms that allow this species to survive this temperature range. In order to understand how sheepshead minnow physiology is affected by temperature acclimation and acute changes in temperature, I conducted research on this species using a multi-level approach. I began at the organismal level,… more

Mechanically Driven Reconstruction of Materials at Sliding Interfaces to Control Wear

Description: To minimize global carbon emissions, having efficient jet engines and internal combustion engines necessitates utilizing lightweight alloys such as Al, Ti, and Mg-based alloys. Because of their remarkable strength/weight ratio, these alloys have received a lot of attention. Nonetheless, they have very poor tribological behavior, particularly at elevated temperatures beyond 200 °C, when most liquid lubricants begin to fail in lubrication. Over the last two decades, there has been a lot of intere… more

Basic Gamma-Ray Data for ART Heat Deposition Calculations

Description: In order that fairly accurate thermal stress calculations can be made on the ART, it is necessary to have a reasonable picture of the temperature distribution in the reactor. To get the temperature distributions, and to determine cooling requirements in various parts of the reactor, one must know the heat deposition rates due to alpha particles, beta rays, gamma rays, and neutrons in all parts of the reactor. The present report contains only the basic physical data necessary to determine the he… more
