Costs to build Fermilab in 1984 dollars

Description: It is of current interest to examine the costs incurred to date to build Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and to determine what those costs are when stated in FY 1984 constant dollars. The appended tables are in support of this exercise and are based on all costs for Equipment items (reduced by obsolescence) and all Plant Projects which have been appropriated through FY 1984. Also included are non-plant costs which are required to complete the Energy Saver, Tevatron I and II projects (i.e., Equipment and R and D in support of Construction). This study makes the assumption that all funding through FY 1984 will have been costed by the end of FY 1986. Those costs incurred in FY 1985 and FY 1986 have been deflated to FY 1984 dollars. See Appendix A for the DOE inflation factors used in the conversion to FY 1984 dollars. The costs are identified in three categories. The Accelerator Facilities include all accelerator components, the buildings which enclose them and utilities which support them. The Experimental Facilities include all beam lines, enclosures, utilities and experimental equipment which are usable in current experimental programs. The Support Facilities include lab and office space, shops, assembly facilities, roads, grounds and the utilities which do not specifically support the Accelerator or Experimental Facilities, etc.

Multiple gas analyzer sample test points

Description: Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) is now beginning to depend upon dedicated gas analyzers in their collider and large fixed target experiment areas. In the past one or two gas samples were taken and sent off to Argonne National Laboratory for gas analysis, for even a basic check of ratios for Ar (Argon) C{sub 2}H{sub 6} (Ethane) 50/50% mixtures. This paper discusses the measuring techniques.

Spool piece aperture: warm to cold temperature position changes

Description: In an effort to determine the position of the correction coil system contained in the spool piece in operation, a series of experiments were done in Lab 2 during the cryogenic testing of the spools. A special turn-around box was constructed which had a window through which a sighting could be made of the aperture of the coil packages. A set of four survey monuments were constructed with three point suspension, which were back-lighted by placing a small bulb behind each target which could be turned on individually external to the spool string while under vacuum and at any temperature. The targets were located at the ends of each correction coil package in their beam tube.

Brief summary of staffing levels at Fermilab during initial construction years

Description: This paper very briefly summarizes the work of the various groups that were involved from the beginning through the end of the initial construction phase of the Fermilab project (defined here to be July 1, 1972) and the final construction or completion phase which is here defined as December 31, 1973. The numbers in this report have been gathered by examining the personnel records of Fermilab with the research being done by Chuck Marofske, the Head of Laboratory Services and his staff and by assembling information from the memories of people still with the laboratory in 1983. Since there was much mobility within the laboratory during the construction years and frequent reorganizations were the norm, the numbers presented herein can not be considered to be more accurate than about +- 5%.

History of the polarized beam

Description: In 1973, the first high energy polarized proton beam was developed at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron (ZGS). It operated very successfully and productively until 1979 when the ZGS was shut down permanently. This report describes the development, characteristics, and operations of this facility.

A new main control room for the AGS complex

Description: A new Main Control Room (MCR) has been built to control the accelerators of the AGS Complex. A new physical environment was produced to better control light, sound, temperature, and traffic. New control consoles were built around the work-stations that make up the distributed control system. Equipment placement within consoles and console placement within the room reflect attention to the human factors'' needs of the operator. 1 ref., 2 figs.

Mirror and grating surface figure requirements for grazing incidence synchrotron radiation beamlines: Power loading effects

Description: At present, grazing incidence mirrors are used almost exclusively as the first optical element in VUV and soft x-ray synchrotron radiation beamlines. The performance of these mirrors is determined by thermal and mechanical stress-induced figure errors as well as by figure errors remaining from the grinding and polishing process. With the advent of VUV and soft x-ray undulators and wigglers has come a new set of thermal stress problems related to both the magnitude and the spatial distribution of power from these devices. In many cases the power load on the entrance slits and gratings in these beamlines is no longer negligible. The dependence of thermally-induced front-end mirror figure errors on various storage ring and insertion device parameters (especially those at the National Synchrotron Light Source) and the effects of these figure errors on two classes of soft x-ray beamlines are presented.

Upgrade of the Proton West secondary beamline

Description: As originally designed and operated, protons entering PW6 were steered by a series of EPB dipoles into a single interaction length beryllium target, some 43 feet from the enclosure wall. Ensuing secondary beams, either p{sup +}/{pi}{sup +} or p{sup -}/{pi}{sup -}, were collected by a string of quadrupoles following the target, steered westward, away from the Proton Center line, through PW6 and PW7, and ultimately focussed on experiment production targets located within the large PW8 hall. Around the Spring of 1988 it was decided to upgrade the existing Proton West secondary beamline to allow for transport of a primary proton beam, anticipated to be either 800 or 900 GeV/c, through PW8. This upgrade project, which is now nearing completion, was largely motivated by the then recent approval of E-771, a hadronic beauty production experiment located in PW8. E-771 represents the third in a series of experiments for the large-acceptance dimuon spectrometer presently located at the end of the Proton West beamline. This Technical Memo is a summary of the upgrade --- an explanation of the underlying strategy and a documentation of the final locations of the secondary beamline elements. 6 refs., 2 figs., 2 tabs.

Mechanical construction of the 805 MHz side-coupled cavities for the Fermilab Linac Upgrade

Description: The manufacturing processes for the Side Coupled Structures (SCS) are intimately connected with their tuning requirements. Present Computer Numerical Controlled machining allows very repeatable accuracies of dimensions. This has led to a manufacturing sequence which reduces the need for repeated machining step. Surface tolerances in the high field region of the accelerating cells were assured. Tuning steps were reduced at all stages of construction. This paper will describe the mechanical steps used to fabricate the SCS structure at Fermilab.

Operation of large cryogenic systems

Description: This report is based on the past 12 years of experiments on R and D and operation of the 27 kW Fermilab Tevatron Cryogenic System. Upgrading the Fermilab Linac local control system

Description: A new control system for the Fermilab Linac is being designed, built and implemented. First, the nine-year-old linac control system is being replaced. Second, a control system for the new 805 MHz part of the linac is being built. The two systems are essentially identical, so that when the installations are complete, we will still have a single Linac Control System. 8 refs., 5 figs.

Tuning methods for the 805 MHz side-coupled cavities in the Fermilab linac upgrade

Description: The fabrication and tuning of Side-Coupled Accelerator Structures (SCS) are strongly interrelated. Consideration of mechanical tolerances and fabrication sequences can reduce tuning steps that require repeated machining. With available CNC machines and numerical calculation programs, it is possible to machine cavities to a calculated shape. Accelerating cells are tuned by control of the depth of coupling slots rather than trimming the nose of accelerating cells. Predicting the correct frequency off-sets to use at each manufacturing stage produces a brazed structure of proper couplig with a minimum amount of tuning. 2 refs., 1 fig.

RF device for precision location of the beam-position detectors in the Energy Saver

Description: The task is to measure the center line of the beam detector with respect to the magnetic centerline with a precision of +-0.2 mm; the measurement must be made on 250 magnets (they come in 6 lengths, from 25'' to 99'') by a technician. Optical, mechanical, and electrical techniques for carrying out this procedure were considered. An RF device operating at 53 MHZ was adopted for the following reasons: (a) it provides complete electrical checkout of the hardware at operating frequency, including the bidirectional operation of the pickup, (b) no mechanical contact with the strip lines is required, and (c) the demands of production measurements and maintenance of calibration are better matched to the skills of an average technician. We describe the conceptual design, fabrication, and performance of this device.

Accelerator Division satellite refrigerator compressor system and gas purification procedures

Diagnostics for the 400 MeV FNAL Linac

Description: The last four 201 MHz alvarez tanks of the twenty-year-old, 200 MeV Fermilab Linac are being replaced by seven high-gradient (7 KV/m), high-frequency (805 MHz) side-coupled-cavity structures to produce a 400 MeV beam for injection into the Booster. Good, reliable beam diagnostics are an important factor in the success of this project. This paper discusses the diagnostic systems.

EPICS system: system structure and user interface

Description: This paper present the user's view of and the general organization of the EPICS control system at Fermilab. Various subsystems of the EPICS control system are discussed. These include the user command language, software protection, the device database, remote computer interfaces, and several application utilities. This paper is related to two other papers on EPICS: an overview paper and a detailed implementation paper.

Lab 6 winding facility

Description: This note describes the winding machine installed by the facility support group at lab 6 in the Fermilab village. It is available for use by outside users and groups within the lab. The machine can wind wire planes whose longest dimension is less than 10 feet. The Wire spacing range has an upper practical limit of about 5mm. Spacing beyond this requires a very long index time and therefore slows down the winding speed prohibitively.

The development of controls for pulse-to-pulse modulation at the Brookhaven AGS complex

Description: Operation of the AGS Complex, comprising a 200 MeV Linac, the 1.5 GeV Booster (400 MeV/amu heavy ions) which is under construction, and the AGS, requires service of multiple uses with different beam requirements. Local Linac users, Booster commissioning with protons and heavy ions, and the AGS physics program and accelerator studies must run concurrently in various combinations. A new timing system is being built which will distribute serially encoded events derived from real-time and magnetic field clocks to each accelerator. The master timing of the supercycle will be managed centrally with encoded reset events determining the assigned user for each pulse. Operational aspects of the design of this system will be described, along with the principal control system modifications necessary to implement this mode of operation. 4 refs., 3 figs.

Refurbishment of the vacuum system of the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron

Description: Three years ago a program was initiated at Brookhaven National Laboratory to upgrade the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) vacuum system. The three objectives of this work were to: (1) improve the vacuum system reliability; (2) improve its maintainability; and (3) improve its operating pressure from the present 2-3 /times/ 10/sup /minus/7/ Torr to < 10/sup /minus/8/ Torr. Metal and elastomer seal tests for accelerator applications

Description: The vacuum system of the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory has more than a thousand metal vacuum seals. Also, numerous elastomer seals are used throughout the AGS to seal large beam component chambers. An accelerator upgrade program is being implemented to reduce the AGS operating pressure by x100 and improve the reliability of the vacuum system. This paper describes work in progress on metal and elastomer vacuum seals to help meet those two objectives. Tests are reported on the sealing properties of a variety of metal seals used on different sealing surfaces. Results are also given on reversible sorption properties of certain elastomers. 16 refs., 6 figs., 4 tabs.
