Application of the boson polynomials of U(n) to physical problems. [Review]

Description: A review is given of the properties of a general class of polynomials in the boson operators which were found useful for obtaining the explicit unitary irreducible representations of the unitary group itself, and to show how these same polynomials provide a unified approach for obtaining the explicit solutions to several classic problems in physics and chemistry. 24 references. Spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry

Description: There has been recently a revival of interest in supersymmetric gauge theories, stimulated by the hope that supersymmetry might help in clarifying some of the questions which remain unanswered in the so called Grand Unified Theories and in particular the gauge hierarchy problem. In a Grand Unified Theory one has two widely different mass scales: the unification mass M approx. = 10/sup 15/GeV at which the unification group (e.g. SU(5)) breaks down to SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) and the mass ..mu.. appr… more

Deconfinement transition on a BCH lattice

Description: The results of a Monte Carlo simulation of pure SU(2) gauge theory at finite temperature on a body-centered hypercubic(BCH) lattice are presented. The behavior of the transition temperature as a function of the critical lattice coupling g* is compared with the prediction of asymptotic scaling as given by the perturbative ..beta.. function. A comparison of the results for the BCH lattice and the simple hypercubic(SH) lattice provides important tests of universality.

Higgs mass scales and matter-antimatter oscillations in grand unified theories

Description: A general discussion of mass scales in grand unified theories is presented, with special emphasis on Higgs scalars which mediate neutron-antineutron (n-anti n) and hydrogen-antihydrogen (H-anti H) oscillations. It is shown that the analogue of survival hypothesis for fermions naturally makes such particles superheavy, thus leading to unobservable lifetimes. If this hypothesis is relaxed, an interesting possibility of potentially observable n-anti n and H-anti H transitions, mutually related ari… more

Symmetry breaking patterns for unitary and orthogonal groups

Description: The spontaneous symmetry breaking pattern for SU(n) and 0(10) is discussed. It is based on the exact treatment of the absolute minimum of the Higgs potential as a function of scalar fields belonging to the fundamental and adjoint representations of SU(n), the spinor and adjoint representations of 0(10). 2 tables.

SU(4) breaking and the new particles: some applications

Description: The applications for SU(4) breaking for new particles considered are an expression of the vector and axial vector weak charges of charmed hadrons and a relativistic mass formula for vector mesons. Wave functions defined in momentum space are considered. Quantum numbers of various meson resonances are found. (JFP)
