Evaluating Methods for Determining Water Use in the High Plains in Parts of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming; 1979

Description: From introduction: "The U.S. Geological Survey began a 5-year study of the High Plains regional aquifer during the 1978 to provide the hydrologic information needed for the development of computer models to evaluate the aquifer's response to ground-water management alternatives." It contains maps, graphs, and tables.

Regional characterization of Western China

Description: Geological, geophysical, and seismic data are being assembled and organized into a knowledge base for Western China as part of the CTBT Research and Development regional characterization effort. We have begun our analysis using data from the station WMQ of the Chinese Digital Seismic Network (CDSN). Regional seismograms are being analyzed to construct travel time curves, velocity models, attenuation characteristics, and to quantify regional propagation effects such as phase blockages. Using locations from the USGS Preliminary Determination of Epicenters (PDE) we have identified Pn, Pg, Sn, and Lg phases, constructed travel time curves, and estimated apparent velocities using linear regression. Surface wave group velocities will be measured and inverted for regional structure. Preliminary noise spectra for WMQ have been obtained from the IRIS DMC. Chinese seismicity catalogs from the USGS and SSB are being used to identify and obtain seismic data (including mine seismicity) and information for lower magnitude events. We have identified the locations of nearly 500 mines in China for inclusion in the knowledge base. Future work will involve expanding the data collection and analysis efforts to a larger region using data from additional CDSN, IRIS and portable stations.

The refusal problem and nonresponse in on-line organizational surveys

Description: This research study examines the use of one form of computer-assisted data collection, the electronic or online survey, as an organizational research tool. The study utilized historical response data and administered an online survey to individuals known to be cooperative or uncooperative in other online surveys. It investigated nonresponse bias and and response effects of typical responders, periodic participants, and typical refusers within a sample of corporate employees in a computer-interactive interviewing environment utilizing online surveys.

Evaluation of Thermograph Data for California Streams

Description: This report presents "statistical analysis of water-temperature data from California streams" and concludes that "long-term operation of thermographs does not prove a more useful record than either short-term operation of such instruments or periodic measurements." It contains tables and illustrations.

Hydrology of Lakes in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Metropolitan Area: A Summary of Available Data Stored -- Using a Data-Base Management System

Description: Abstract:Data were collected and summarized on the hydrology and hydrogeology of 949 lakes, 10 acres (4 hectares) or larger, in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, Minnesota. Eight tables totaling over 100 pages present data on location, depth, area, lake level, ecological and game-management classification, inflowing and outflowing streams, soils, bedrock type, water added to or take from lake, and reported lake-related problems. SYSTEM 2000, a generalized computer data-base management system, was used to organize the data and prepare the tables. SYSTEM 2000 provides powerful capabilities for future retrieval and analyses of the data. The data base is available to potential users so that questions not implicitly anticipated in the preparation of the published tables can be answered readily, and the user can retrieve data in tabular or other forms to meet his particular needs.

Buried Aquifers in the Brooten-Belgrade and Lake Emily Areas, West-Central Minnesota -- Factors Related to Developing Water for Irrigation

Description: Purpose and scope: The purpose of this report is to determine, as far as possible, the occurrence of buried aquifers and to describe their hydrologic characteristics and water-yielding capability. The evaluation is based mainly on 44 test holes drilled specifically for this investigation. These test holes are too widely spaced to correlate individual aquifers. Such correlation must await more detailed closely spaced test drilling. Forty-two test holes were drilled in the Brooten-Belgrade area; hence the mapping is restricted to this part. Two test holes were drilled in the Lake Emily area, allowing only one geologic section to be presented. PIan-view mapping would require considerable additional test drilling.

Maps Showing Ground-Water Conditions in the San Simon Area, Cochise and Graham Counties, Arizona, and in Hidalgo County, New Mexico--1975

Description: This report includes two maps of the same location, one describing water-level contour, well depth in which depth to water was measured, the other describing well from which water sample was collected and irrigated areas. It includes a letter from the district chief of the United States Department of the Interior to users of the geological survey hydrologic data.

Development and Analysis of an Employee Attitude Survey

Description: A factor analysis using an oblique rotation was performed on an employee attitude survey developed for a data processing company. The survey was administered to 669 volunteer employees. There were 291 males and 378 females. It was hypothesized that four main factors would be identified as "Advancement Opportunities," "Compensation and Benefits," "Management Style," and "Job." Results of the factor analysis did not confirm the hypothesized a priori factor structure. The lack of confirmation of the hypothesized factor structure was found to be a result of poor survey construction. The attitude survey was found not to be a valid measure of employee attitudes. Implications of this study suggest that a poorly constructed attitude survey may be worse than no survey at all.
