Revisiting surface core-level shifts for ionic compounds

Description: Article establishing a theoretical method which is able to relate the binding energy shifts to the electronic structure of a material. In order to establish such a methodology, the CaO(100) surface to bulk core-level binding energy shifts are studied with Hartree-Fock and density-functional theory methods using both cluster and periodic slab models.

Thermal Conductance of Metallic Surfaces in Contact

Description: "Research in thermal contact resistance at MIT and advances made during the past year are summarized. The problem of predicting cortact resistance is examined in an analysis of a model for the contact which relates the geometry of actual surfaces in contact to the contact model, and a deformation analysis which relates the contact geometry to the load carried by the surfaces. Experimental procedures are described and are applied to two stainless steel surfaces in contact and to W and graphite s… more

Some methods of surface analysis for the prediction of thermal resistance of metal contacts

Description: "Equations for the heat-transfer coefficient existing at the interface of two metals in contact are discussed. The results of applying the equations (with a graphical determination of the geometric parameters) to an iron--aluminum contact are presented. A method is given for performing the graphical analysis by means of a general purpose analog computer. Data are included that were obtained by applying this method to Blanchard ground stainless steel surfaces in contact. Statistical analysis was… more

Specific Surface and Bulk Density of U3O8 and UO2 as Factors in UF4 Production on the 250 Gram Uranium Scale

Description: Specific surface and bulk density measurements were made on samples of 22 U308 materials which had been prepared by calcination at 900°C of widely differing uranium peroxide precipitates and had been evaluated as to "reactivity" by successive treatment with hydrogen and a mixture of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and hydrogen in a production-type batch process for the preparation of UF4. Specific surface and bulk density measurements were also made on samples of the 22 corresponding U02 intermedia… more

Fabrication and Testing of Biomimetic Microstructures for Walkway Tribometers

Description: The main objective of this work is to give contribution in both additive manufacturing (AM) and tribometry derived from the application and study of materials available with the use of biomimetic designs. Additional contributions are determining what effects treatments for flooring surfaces may have on the dynamic coefficient of friction and the effects of these products on common surfaces. The validity of the proposed methodology for a proof of concept was demonstrated by comparing measured dy… more

Electrical Resistivity of Rare-Earth Alloys

Description: From abstract: "Resistivities of solid solution alloys in the systems Gd-Lu, Tb-Lu, Gd-Er, and Y-Lu were measured from 4.2-320°K to determine the behavior of the resistivity in alloy systems with magnetic phenomena arising from localized magnetic moments. A large contribution to the residual resistivity is caused by the random distribution of these localized moments through the lattice. An analysis of the lattice resistivity of the metals shows large variations across the heavy rare-earth serie… more

Soft x-ray camera for internal shape and current density measurements on a noncircular tokamak

Description: Soft x-ray measurements of the internal plasma flux surface shaped in principle allow a determination of the plasma current density distribution, and provide a necessary monitor of the degree of internal elongation of tokamak plasmas with a noncircular cross section. A two-dimensional, tangentially viewing, soft x-ray pinhole camera has been fabricated to provide internal shape measurements on the PBX-M tokamak. It consists of a scintillator at the focal plane of a foil-filtered pinhole camera,… more
