A Novel Coal Feeder for Production of Low Sulfur Fuel

Description: During the past three months, the coal feeding system has been tested and currently undergoing evaluation at the University of Cincinnati. The system consists primarily of an auger feed tube which is used to both convey and provide desulfurization of a high sulfur coal feedstock. The coal is conveyed at temperatures ranging from 350 to 550{degrees}C and under normal atmospheric pressure. Gas chromatographic studies of the relative retention of the sulfur isotopes in carbonyl sulfide, carbon disulfide, and sulfur dioxide

Description: A precision gas chromatograph, coupled to a quadrupole mass spectrometer and an on-line computer, was used to study the fractionation on Porasil A of the /sup 32/S//sup 34/S isotopic pair in a variety of sulfur-containing molecules. Hot gas desulfurization with oxides of zinc, iron, and vanadium

Description: The objective of this study is to develop an improved sorbent which can reduce H{sub 2}S levels up to 1 ppmv or less, which can stabilize zinc, and produce economically recoverable amounts of elemental sulfur during regeneration. For this purpose, the desulfurization performance of sorbents prepared by the addition of various amounts of V{sub 2}O{sub 5} to the zinc ferrite sorbent is investigated.

Evaluation of an optical microscope method for coal-pyrite/marcasite differentiation

Description: A reflected-polarized light microscope technique for coal marcasite-pyrite differentiation is detailed. Presence of the two minerals was verified by x-ray diffraction analysis. The optical technique produced marcasite content values that were consistently lower than those measured by x-ray diffraction. Although the optical technique produces data that are at best semi-quantitative, it can be used to approximate (+-20%) marcasite concentration in coal without a heavy mineral concentration step.

Description: During the third quarter of this program, liquid junction devices based upon the semiconductors MoSe/sub 2/, MoS/sub 2/, GaAs, and CdSe have been evaluated. Lifetime testing of MoSe/sub 2/ and MoS/sub 2/ materials in acidic halogen electrolytes at constant current densities of 5 mA/cm/sup 2/ have shown excellent stability to date. Description: The conventional treatment technology for hydrogen-sulfide is based on Claus chemistry; elemental sulfur is recovered but the hydrogen is lost as water although the fuel value of the hydrogen is recovered as heat. Conditioning of geothermal brine effluents for injection: use of coagulants
