Stresses and Deformations in Wings Subjected to Torsion

Description: Note solving basic equations of Karman and Chien by representing the shape of a torsion box by means of a Fourier series. The coefficients of the series are determined by conventional methods. Results obtained for angles of twist and normal stresses are in good agreement with results of Karman and Chien except at sharp corners.

Interaction of Column and Local Buckling in Compression Members

Description: Note presenting two methods for calculating actual buckling stress, including the author's exact theory and the method of split rigidities, both of which lead almost identical results. Columns with box-, I-, H-, and T-sections and angles are considered separately.

Buckling of rectangular sandwich plates subjected to edgewise compression with loaded edges simply supported and unloaded edges clamped

Description: Report presenting the compressive stress for buckling for a rectangular flat sandwich plate with loaded edges simply supported and unloaded edges rigidly clamped. The true values of the buckling stress are estimated as the arithmetic means of these bounds and are presented in a diagram which covers the entire practical range of the geometric and mechanical quantities involved.

Fatigue Strengths of 14S-T4 Aluminum Alloy Subjected to Biaxial Tensile Stresses

Description: Note presenting an investigation to determine the influence of biaxial tensile stresses on the fatigue strength of a 14S-T4 aluminum alloy when subjected to various ratios of biaxial stresses. The effect on the fatigue strength of varying the ratio of the biaxial stresses was studied. Anisotropy of the material was found to be the main characteristics that affected fatigue strength.

Experimental and theoretical determination of thermal stresses in a flat plate

Description: Report determining the thermal stresses induced in a flat, rectangular, 75S-T6 aluminum-alloy plate by nonuniform heating both experimentally and theoretically. Results regarding the temperature distribution, longitudinal direct stresses, shear stresses, transverse direct stresses, and agreement between theory and experiment are provided.

An Investigation of Propeller Vibrations Excited by Wing Wakes

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the principal variables affecting the excitation of a propeller for vibration at a frequency of twice propeller speed using a conventional propeller with solid aluminum-alloy blades operating in the wake of a wing. The drag of the wing and spacing between the flap trailing edge and propeller plane were all adjustable. Results regarding wing drag data, vibratory stresses, damping, and theoretical considerations of wake excited blade stresses are provided.
