RTV 21 Displacements

Description: A seal is needed for the cover of the Nitrogen Test Vessel in order to prevent leakage of the N{sub 2} gas. This seal is to be molded out of RTV 21. In this experiment, the Modulus of Elasticity of the RTV was sought after, and the displacements of the RTV due to various stresses were measured to see if they were large enough to provide a tight seal between the vessel and its cover.

D0 Silicon Upgrade: Estimates of the Deflections and Stresses of the Toshiba Cold Mass Support System

Description: Tensile stresses in the Toshiba cold mass support links generated by the loadings the coil is subject to, and the deflections the coil experiences as a result of these loadings, are estimated. The axial links are conservatively designed and it should be reasonably easy to ensure that the three links at each end of the coil carry approximately equal loads. Small deviations from this ideal should not have great consequence as a system-of-three is somewhat forgiving in this regard. The use of prel… more

Analysis of OH Bolted Ear Connection

Description: The D0 endcap calorimeter outer hadronic (OH) modules play a major structural role in the calorimeter assembly. The disrete modules, once connected together, form a ring within which other massive calorimetry will reside. It has been proposed that the connection of the OH at the downstream end be accomplished by extending the downstream endplates in the radial direction to form 'ears', and then through-bolting between adjacent ears as shown in Fig. 1. A single 2 1/4 in. dia. bolt is used, and p… more

D-Zero Signal Board Feed-Thru, Instrumentation and Hi-Voltage Boxes

Description: The three boxes being reviewed all operate at a pressure of less than 15 psig. Since they are relieved at 13 psig, they fall outside the scopes of the ASME Pressure Vessel Code, Fermilab Engineering Standard SD-37B, and Chapter 5031 of the Fermilab Safety Manual, therefore a Pressure Vessel Engineering Note showing compliance with SD-37B is not required. In calculating the design stresses, only the largest of the three boxes, the signal board feed-thru box, was analyzed. This box had the larges… more

D0 Silicon Upgrade: Cryogenic Lines at Refrigerator : Thermal Contraction Analysis of Four Cryogenic Utility Lines for the D0 Upgrade

Description: The cryogenic lines GHE and LN2 contain two lines each, one for supply and the other for return. The tubing was stress analyzed per ASME code for pressure piping, standard ANSI/ASME B31.3. A commercial pipe stress analysis and design system by ALGOR{reg_sign} was used for the analysis along with the calculated maximum stress, 25,050 psi. They were all analyzed for combined pressure, thermal movement, and dead weight and all the stresses were below this allowable stress limit. There are sections… more

D0 Silicon Upgrade: Thermally Induced Stresses in the Components of a D0 Ladder in the Silicon Tracker

Description: During the operation of the silicon tracker, the ladders will be in direct thermal contact with a cooling channel. The expected operating temperature of the cooling channel is 0 C, maintained by a cooling fluid whose bulk temperature is below 0 C. The assembly temperature is assumed to be 22 C. Due to the mis-match of material expansion coefficients, thermal stresses will be induced in the epoxy, beryllium, and silicon of the ladders. Calculations are presented here as well as some thermal cycl… more

Finite Element Analysis of G-10 Flange/Board for the CC Feedthrough Box

Description: The assembly of the stainless steel feedthrough box for the CC cryostat resulted in distortion of the slotted plates through which the circuit boards must be installed. Due to the o-ring grooves in the plates and the presence of small pump out passages it is difficult to machine the surface flat after installation. Installing the boards on the distorted surface requires distorting the g-10 flange and the board which is glued to it to match the surface distortion and achieve a seal. This results… more
