Magnitude and Frequency of Floods in Eastern Oregon

Description: From purpose and scope: This report describes methods for estimating the magnitude and frequency of floods at ungaged sites on streams with unregulated flow in eastern Oregon. The purpose is to provide a method to estimate flood magnitude and frequency and to present the supporting data. The report is based on data from nearly all unregulated streams (or data from regulated streams prior to their regulation) where gaging stations have been operated.

Technique for Estimating Magnitude and Frequency of Floods in Kentucky

Description: Abstract: This report presents flood magnitude and frequency relations applicable to 'unregulated streams in Kentucky. The relations are based on flood data at 117 gaging stations in Kentucky and 14 in adjacent states having 10 or more years of record not significantly affected by man-made changes . Equations that relate flood magnitude and frequency to contributing drainage area in 16 geographic areas may be used to estimate magnitude of future floods with recurrence intervals of as much as 100 years on gaged and ungaged streams having drainage areas of 10 to 4,300 square miles (25 .9, to 11,100 square kilometers) . Estimating equations are also presented in graphical form for the convenience of the user . Additional graphs are presented to estimate flood magnitude for selected recurrence intervals along the Cumberland, Kentucky, and Ohio Rivers .

Digital Model to Predict Effects of Pumping from the Arikaree Aquifer in the Dwyer Area, Southeastern Wyoming.

Description: Abstract: ^ digital computer model was used to model an unconfined sandstone aquifer (Arikaree aquifer) in about 340 square miles (880 square kilometers) in southeastern Wyoming. The model was calibrated by comparing observed and calculated changes in the potentiometric surface and leakage from the aquifer along streams during water year 1974. The comparison was fairly good for changes in the potentiometric surface and was good for leakage. The calibrated model was used to predict changes in the potentiometric surface and leakage through water year 1979, assuming no new ground-water development after 1974 and normal recharge to the aquifer. Water-level declines of as much as 14 feet (4.3 meters) were predicted, but much of the area would be relatively unaffected. The total predicted decrease in leakage between water years 1974 and 1979 was about 500 acre-feet (0.6 cubic hectometer) per year; the greatest decrease was predicted along streams closest to areas of pumpage.

STREAM2 Revision 1: An aqueous release emergency response model

Description: This report documents the revision for STREAM2 code and its input files. STREAM2 is an aqueous transport module of the WIND system. As requested by the Emergency Response Department, two surface aqueous release locations (McQueen Branch and Tims Branch) were added in the STREAM2 code. In addition, the revised STREAM2 has the capability to vary the channel-segment volume based on channel flow to better represent the open channel hydraulics. Thus, the updated version of STREAM2 improves the contaminant transport calculation

Genetic Analysis of Snake River Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka), 2003 Technical Report.

Description: A total of 1720 Oncorhynchus nerka tissue samples from 40 populations were characterized using mitochondrial DNA RFLPs (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms). Analysis of anadromous sockeye populations indicated the historical presence of four major maternal lineages. Thirty-five composite mitochondrial haplotypes were observed from the 40 populations of O. nerka sampled throughout the Pacific Northwest. Six of these composite haplotypes ranged in frequency from 7-26% overall and were commonly observed in most populations. The six haplotypes together comprised 90% of the sampled O. nerka. An average of 4.6 composite haplotypes were observed per population. Genetic markers used were satisfactory in separating Redfish Lake anadromous sockeye, residual sockeye and outmigrants from the sympatric kokanee population that spawns in the Fishhook Creek tributary. Outmigrants appear to be primarily composed of progeny from resident residual sockeye, and captively-reared progeny of the captive broodstock program. Thus, residual sockeye may be considered a suitable source of genetic variation to maintain genetic diversity among captive broodstocks of anadromous sockeye. Fishhook Creek kokanee are genetically diverse and during spawning, are temporally and spatially isolated from the residual sockeye population. Eleven composite haplotypes were observed in the kokanee population. The unusually high number of haplotypes is most likely a consequence of periodic stocking of Redfish Lake with kokanee from other sources. Genetic data from Redfish Lake creel samples taken during 1996-1999 putatively indicate the incidental take of a listed resident sockeye.

Hangman Restoration Project Year-End Report FY2008.

Description: This report covers the main goals of FY2008 from which the Work Elements were derived. The goals and products are listed by heading and the associated work elements are referenced in the text. A list of the FY2008 Work Elements is included as Appendix A. FY2008 witnessed the completion of the hntkwipn Management Plan and the first substantive efforts to restore the important habitats encompassed by the mitigation properties in the Upper Hangman Watershed. Native grasses were planted and germination was evaluated. Also, drain tiles that greatly altered the hydrologic function of the Sheep and Hangman Creek Flood Plains were removed and/or disrupted. Preparation for future restoration efforts were also made in FY2008. Designs were produced for the realignment of Sheep Creek and the decommissioning of seven drainage ditches within hntkwipn. A prioritization plan was drafted that greatly expands the area of focus for restoring native fish population in Hangman Creek.

Fisheries Enhancement on the Coeur d'Alene Indian Reservation; Hangman Creek, Annual Report 2001-2002.

Description: Historically, Hangman Creek produced Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and Steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) for the Upper Columbia Basin Tribes. One weir, located at the mouth of Hangman Creek was reported to catch 1,000 salmon a day for a period of 30 days a year (Scholz et al. 1985). The current town of Tekoa, Washington, near the state border with Idaho, was the location of one of the principle anadromous fisheries for the Coeur d'Alene Tribe (Scholz et al. 1985). The construction, in 1909, of Little Falls Dam, which was not equipped with a fish passage system, blocked anadromous fish access to the Hangman Watershed. The fisheries were further removed with the construction of Chief Joseph and Grand Coulee Dams. As a result, the Coeur d'Alene Indian Tribe was forced to rely more heavily on native fish stocks such as Redband trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri), Westslope Cutthroat trout (O. clarki lewisii), Bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) and other terrestrial wildlife. Historically, Redband and Cutthroat trout comprised a great deal of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe's diet (Power 1997).
