Stirling total energy systems study. Final report, May 15, 1976--June 13, 1977

Description: The application of Stirling cycle prime movers to total energy power generation systems was investigated. Electrical, heating, and cooling demand profiles for a typical residential complex, hospital, and office building were studied, and alternative Stirling total energy systems were conceptualized for each site. These were analyzed in detail and contrasted with purchased-power systems for these sites to determine fuel-energy savings and investment attractiveness. The residential complex and ho… more

Distributed and hierarchical control techniques for large-scale power plant systems

Description: In large-scale systems, integrated and coordinated control functions are required to maximize plant availability, to allow maneuverability through various power levels, and to meet externally imposed regulatory limitations. Nuclear power plants are large-scale systems. Prime subsystems are those that contribute directly to the behavior of the plant's ultimate output. The prime subsystems in a nuclear power plant include reactor, primary and intermediate heat transport, steam generator, turbine … more

Composition of gases vented from a condenser

Description: Designers of systems that involve condensers often need to predict the amount of process vapor that accompanies the noncondensable gases that are vented from the condensers. An approximation is given that appears to provide, in many cases, reasonably accurate values for the mole ratio of process vapor to noncondensable gases in the vented mixture. The approximation is particularly applicable to flash and direct-contact power systems for geothermal brines and ocean thermal energy conversion (OTE… more

TWO-PHASE PRESSURE DROP IN A NATURAL CIRCULATION BOILING CHANNEL

Description: Experimental two-phase pressure drop data were obtained from a 1/4 x 2 x 60-in. vertical, uniformly heated, test section. The local volume fraction of steam was measured simultaneously with the pressure drop, thus allowing separation of the terms for hydrostatic and acceleration pressure drops from the over-all static pressure drop. The results are expressed in terms of an averge two-phase friction factor multiplier, R = DELTA P/sub TPF// DELTA P/sub L/O/sub ,/ and are co mpared with the Martin… more

Reformers for the Production of Hydrogen from Methanol and Alternative Fuels for Fuel Cell Powered Vehicles

Description: The objective of this study was (i) to assess the present state of technology of reformers that convert methanol (or other alternative fuels) to a hydrogen-rich gas mixture for use in a fuel cell, and (ii) to identify the R & D needs for developing reformers for transportation applications. Steam reforming and partial oxidation are the two basic types of fuel reforming processes. The former is endothermic while the latter is exothermic. Reformers are therefore typically designed as heat exchang… more

Gasification of char in a membrane filter: Final report

Description: This report deals with the feasibility of reducing the amount of char on a barrier filter by in-place gasification. Compared to the very rapid pyrolysis step, the gasification of char on a filter requires substantial time under conditions that favor the gasification reactions. Three categories of information were of greatest interest: (1) The origin, characteristics and properties of the char. (2) The conditions under which the char was gasified and the rates and extents of the gasification rea… more

Conceptual design of a black liquor gasification pilot plant

Description: In July 1985, Champion International completed a study of kraft black liquor gasification and use of the product gases in a combined cycle cogeneration system based on gas turbines. That study indicated that gasification had high potential as an alternative to recovery boiler technology and offered many advantages. This paper describes the design of the plant, the construction of the pilot plant, and finally presents data from operation of the plant.

Coal: an alternate fuel for thermal enhanced oil recovery steam generation. Final report

Description: This project evaluates technical and economic aspects of using coal to replace lower tier crude oil as fuel for thermal enhanced oil recovery steam generation in Kern County, California. Replacing this oil by an alternate fuel would increase the amount of oil available for sale by approximately 30%. The primary consideration in the evaluation is compliance with emission limitations as proposed in the California Air Resources Board (CARB), Model Rule on April 26, 1978. Three coal technolgies wer… more

Reactor Physics Studies in the Steam Flooded GCFR-Phase 2 Critical Assembly

Description: A possible accident scenario in a Gas-Cooled Fast Reactor (GCFR) is the leakage of secondary steam into the core. Considerable analytical effort has gone into the study of the effects of such an accidental steam entry. The work described in this report represents the first full scale experimental study of the steam-entry phenomenon in GCFRs. The reference GCFR model used for the study was the benchmark GCFR Phase II assembly, and polyethylene foam was used to provide a very homogeneous steam si… more
