COMP: a BASIC language nonlinear least-squares curve fitting program

Description: COMP is an interactive nonlinear least squares routine written in BASIC language and used to obtain estimates of parameters in nonlinear functions and to approximate their associated statistical errors. The program uses the linearizing (or Taylor Series) expansion of partial derivatives outlined in Draper and Smith, (1966, pp. 267 to 270). Therefore, partial derivatives must be supplied (as well as the function) by the user for any new models not currently contained in the programs. When a line… more

Statistical problems arising from simulation of a high-throughput nuclear facility

Description: Shortages in traditional energy sources, such as oil and natural gas, have placed greater emphasis on alternative fuel sources. With an already developed technological base and cost history, nuclear power is an attractive option. However, the public's attitude toward recent terrorism has generated strong demands for improved safeguards measures to deter, detect, and protect against diversion of special nuclear material (SNM). To encourage improved safeguards accountability, the Nuclear Regulato… more

New approach to regression in certain time/space series problems. Technical report No. 11. [Dose-response relationships for air pollution]

Description: This paper introduces a new method for estimating a dose-response relationship from spatially averaged time series of air pollution and health data. Because time is perceived as a nuisance parameter to be eliminated, least-squares regression and traditional time series methodology (e.g., spectral analysis, Box-Jenkins methods) are rejected in favor of a nonparametric estimation procedure based on observing health effects in times of nearly equal pollution. The method requires estimating the rat… more

Description: Computer graphics which are useful for displaying and analyzing data are presented. Many classical and several newly developed graphical techniques in statistical data analysis are presented for small univariate and multivariate data sets. These include histograms, empirical density functions, pie charts, contour plots, a discriminant analysis display, cluster analysis, Chernoff ''faces,'' and Andrews' sine curves. Recent advances in data collection technology and computer data base management … more

SIMS three year study on statistics and environmental factors in health. Technical progress report No. 2

Description: Progress is reported on a study of statistical methods for the correlation of environmental factors and health effects, with emphasis on the effects of air pollution. Statistical methods and models for describing the effects of the environment, measured in terms of pollution and weather variables on health, so far measured only in terms of respiratory diseases, are discussed. Plans for conducting a six-city pollution health study are also discussed. A list of publications during 1976 and 1977 i… more

EDOT: a code to calculate charge particle slowing down in a plasma

Description: EDOT is a code that calculates the slowing down of a test particle in a Maxwellian plasma utilizing continuous slowing down theory. Both nuclear scattering and reactions are included. The output includes slowing down parameters as well as spectra of knock-on ions and in-flight reaction probabilities. The theory, input, and output for the code are described.

Asymptotic normality of X/sup 2/ in mxn tables with n large and small cell expectations

Description: Asymptotic normality for chi/sup 2/ used as a test for homogeneity is established under nonstandard conditions. The case of an mxn table with m fixed and the total number of observations proportional to n is studied for n large. Results are obtained under very mild assumptions on the marginal totals.

Statistical analysis of regional capital and operating costs for electric power generation

Description: This report presents the results of a three and one-half-month study conducted for Brookhaven National Lab. to develop capital and operating cost relationships for seven electric power generating technologies: oil-, coal-, gas-, and nuclear-fired steam-electric plants, hydroelectric plants, and gas-turbine plants. The methodology is based primarily on statistical analysis of Federal Power Commission data for plant construction and annual operating costs. The development of cost-output relations… more

Extreme values of sampled and continuous stochastic data. Technical report No. 10

Description: Statistical extreme value theory is obviously a potentially useful tool in the study of concentrations of materials associated with atmospheric pollution, when maximum levels are of primary interest. The classical theory requires the observed values to be statistically independent. Within the last decade there has been considerable interest in allowing a dependence structure, and an extensive extremal theory now exists for a wide class of statistically dependent values, measured as a discrete s… more

Estimation of spatial distributions from point sources with application to air pollution measurement. Technical report No. 9

Description: A class of weighted estimators of a stationary distribution function is introduced which exploits correlation structure in the data as frequently found in air quality measurements. The nature of these weighted estimates is examined for several simple cases, in particular for spatially clustered measurements where the advantage over the usual empirical distribution function seems most pronounced. An illustration is presented using total suspended particulate concentrations from a 14-station moni… more

Use of gamma ray strength functions for predicting the neutron capture cross section of /sup 88/Y

Description: The present study indicates that the estimation of the gamma-ray strength function is the approach least subject to error when unmeasured capture cross sections are to be computed. An estimate is given for the /sup 88/..gamma..(n,..gamma..) cross section.

A Survey of the Use of Computers at State-Supported Senior Colleges and Universities in the United States

Description: The purpose of this study was to determine the use of the computer in higher education at state-supported senior colleges and universities in the United States. The following findings and conclusions are based on the information gained from the study. 1. The average number of years computers have been used by institutions of higher education is ten. The length of time increases with both the level of offering and the enrollment of the institution. 2. A greater emphasis is placed on administrati… more

The Applications of Regression Analysis in Auditing and Computer Systems

Description: This thesis describes regression analysis and shows how it can be used in account auditing and in computer system performance analysis. The study first introduces regression analysis techniques and statistics. Then, the use of regression analysis in auditing to detect "out of line" accounts and to determine audit sample size is discussed. These applications led to the concept of using regression analysis to predict job completion times in a computer system. The feasibility of this application o… more

Limit theorem for the maximum of an exponential autoregressive process. Technical report No. 14

Description: The asymptotic behavior of the maximum of a particular autoregressive process is discussed. The process was introduced by Gaver and Lewis in 1975 as a generalization of the Poisson process which allows for some dependence in the successive interarrival times. The exact distribution of the maximum of the first two terms and the first three terms in the sequence (denoted by M/sub 1/ and M/sub 2/, respectively) is calculated, and upper and lower bounds are obtained for M/sub n/, the maximum of the… more

Description: The ATU/Fort Hood Solar Total Energy System will include a concentrating solar collector field of several acres. During periods of direct insolation, a heat-transfer fluid will be circulated through the collector field and thus heated to 500 to 600/sup 0/F. Some of the fluid will be circulated through a steam generator to drive a turbine-generator set; additional fluid will be stored in insulated tanks for use when solar energy is not available. The electrical output will satisfy a portion of t… more
