Analysis of Paraho oil shale products and effluents: an example of the multi-technique approach

Description: Inorganic analysis of solid, liquid and gaseous samples from the Paraho Semiworks Retort was completed using a multitechnique approach. The data were statistically analyzed to determine both the precision of each method and to see how closely the various techniques compared. The data were also used to determine the redistribution of 31 trace and major elements in the various effluents, including the offgas for the Paraho Retort operating in the direct mode. Gas chromatographic studies of the relative retention of the sulfur isotopes in carbonyl sulfide, carbon disulfide, and sulfur dioxide

Description: A precision gas chromatograph, coupled to a quadrupole mass spectrometer and an on-line computer, was used to study the fractionation on Porasil A of the /sup 32/S//sup 34/S isotopic pair in a variety of sulfur-containing molecules. Direct spectroscopic observation of charge-exchange recombination of medium-Z elements in the PLT tokamak

Description: We report the first observation of line emission resulting directly from charge-exchange recombination of medium-Z elements (Al, Sc) injected into a PLT discharge. Transitions due to the radiative cascade immediately following charge-exchange of He-like Al and Sc were observed by a VUV spectrograph and two air monochromators. Plutonium isotopic analysis of highly enriched mixed oxides

Description: We investigated the analysis method used by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to determine the plutonium isotopic composition of highly enriched mixed oxides (MOX). The IAEA currently uses the Cicero multichannel analyzer and the IAEAPU algorithm for its analysis. Multiple track Doppler-shift spectroscopy system for TFTR neutral beam injectors

Description: A Doppler-shift spectroscopy system has been installed on the TFTR neutral beam injection system to measure species composition during both conditioning and injection pulses. Description: Radioactivities in materials onboard the returned Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) satellite have been studied by a variety of techniques. Atomic structure of clusters through chemical reactions

Description: Techniques for the probing of isolated metal cluster structure through adsorbate binding patterns will be described. The saturation of clusters with reagents such as ammonia and nitrogen provides information on the number of preferred binding sites for these reagents. Elastic constants and the structural phase transition in La sub 2-x Sr sub x CuO sub 4

Description: Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy is used to measure the temperature dependence of all six elastic moduli of La{sub 2-x}Sr{sub x}CuO{sub 4}. A giant softening (> 50% reduction) in the in-plane shear modulus, c{sub 66}, is observed and is attributed to the tetragonal-orthorhombic structural phase transition in this material. Radiological assessment report for the Lansdowne property, 105-107 East Stratford Avenue, Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, October-December 1984

Description: Areas with elevated levels of radioactivity were found throughout both residences, as well as on the surrounding property. Contamination was also found in the garage behind the 105 East structure. The 105 East residence had substantially more contamination than the 107 East residence, as was expected.
