Continuing development of the DEROB system. Quarterly report, July 1, 1980-September 30, 1980

Description: The last module of the DEROB System has been reprogrammed and recoded in an effort to reduce the computational time and cost associated with using DEROB. Some preliminary tests have been carried out on the new program, and the tentative results show that the time of execution can be reduced anywhere from 7% to 40% of the time required by the previous version of DEROB. The variability in the improvement arises from the options specified by the user. Additional tests are being carried out to debu… more

Passive incentive requirements: a regional assessment

Description: The nation's goal of 20% solar contribution by the turn of the century will be achieved, in part, by the construction of residences heated by virtue of their passive solar designs. These designs are not economically competitive against all conventional fuels in all locations. Some degree of government incentive will be required to assure a competitive position for these designs. A methodology is presented which is used to assess the magnitude of the government incentive required to assure feasi… more

Performance estimation using correlation methods

Description: Correlation methods of prediction have advantages in greatly simplifying the time and complexity of performance predictions of passive solar buildings but are severely constrained in the number of variables which can be considered. Their accuracy is generally adequate for design purposes provided they are applied to buildings which correspond reasonably closely to the reference designs used in developing the correlations. The most simplified correlation procedures (such as the SLR method) are a… more

Systems analysis techniques for annual cycle thermal energy storage solar systems

Description: Community-scale annual cycle thermal energy storage (ACTES) solar systems are promising options for building heat and cooling. A variety of approaches are feasible in modeling ACTES solar systems. The key parameter in such efforts, average collector efficiency, is first examined, followed by several approaches for simple and effective modeling. Methods are also examined for modeling building loads for structures based on both conventional and passive architectural designs. Two simulation models… more

Low-cost site-assembled solar collector designs for use with heat pumps

Description: Four low cost solar collector designs have been produced for use in solar assisted heat pump systems. Three principles guided the design: the use of air as the heat transfer medium, the use of on-site easy-to-install construction rather than modularized prefabricated construction, and the collection of solar energy at reduced temperatures.

Open-cycle absorption cooling using packed-bed absorbent reconcentration

Description: The technical feasibility of a lithium chloride open-cycle absorption air conditioner using solar-heated air for reconcentration of the absorbent solution is examined. In contrast to a successfully operating Soviet design (in which absorbent reconcentration is accomplished by trickling the solution across a sloping black roof exposed to the sun), this study involves a packed-bed concentrator. Solar-heated air reconcentrates the solution by vaporizing water (the refrigerant) from the solution in… more
