Proceedings of the solar thermal concentrating collector technology symposium

Description: The purpose of the symposium was to review the current status of the concentrating collector technology, to disseminate the information gained from experience in operating solar systems, and to highlight the significant areas of technology development that must be vigorously pursued to foster early commercialization of concentrating solar collectors. Separate abstracts were prepared for thirteen invited papers and working group summaries. Two papers were previously abstracted for EDB.

HELIOS: a computational model for solar concentrators

Description: The HELIOS computer code calculates the power concentrated by a field of individually guided heliostats and the resulting flux density (watts/cm/sup 2/) falling upon an arbitrary target grid. The problem has individual subroutines for each task in order to incorporate options for a variety of facet shapes, heliostat designs, field layouts, and tower-receiver apertures, and to facilitate additions and code improvements. HELIOS has been used extensively to analyze questions on safety, performance… more

Isothermal flow distribution in solar collectors and collector manifolds

Description: As a first step to a detailed analysis of the influence of flow in solar collector absorber tubes on the collector's heat transfer and thermal performance, this study investigates the distribution of isothermal flow through a typical system consisting of two manifolds connected by a number of parallel riser-tubes. No thermal effects are taken into account. A discreet hydrodynamic model was developed for this system, and the resulting set of simultaneous nonlinear algebraic equations was so… more

Natural convection characteristics of flat plate collectors. Progress report

Description: The results of an experimental investigation into the convective heat losses in large aspect ratio flat-plate solar collectors are described. An experimental study has been undertaken on a specially designed test cell using a 3 inch Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Air at atmospheric pressure was used as the heat-transfer fluid. The experimental results include interferograms which show the thermal boundary layer formations and the temperature profiles. Local temperature profiles have been analyzed… more

Studies on methods of reducing heat losses from flat plate solar collectors, Phase 2. Annual progress report, February 1, 1976--January 1, 1977

Description: Improvements to flat plate solar collectors for heating and cooling of buildings are being investigated through two parallel studies. The first study, which deals with the free convective heat loss from V-corrugated absorber plate to a plane glass cover, has shown that, for the same average spacing, the free convective heat loss is greater for a V-corrugated absorber plate than for a plane absorber plate. However, provided the average spacing is large enough, the amount of increase is slight. T… more

Optical analysis and optimization of line focus solar collectors

Description: The optical analysis of a solar concentrator is usually carried out by means of a computer ray tracing, a microscopic method that provides an enormous amount of detailed information but obscures functional relationships. This paper describes a macroscopic approach that yields all the parameters needed for the optical design of line focus parabolic troughs in closed analytical form, requiring only minimal computation. The goal of the optical analysis is to determine the flux at the receiver as a… more
