Domain and Surface Structures of Sodium Tungsten Bronzes, NaxWO₃ (0.4 [x [1)

Description: The domain and surface structures of metallic sodium tungsten bronzes, NaxWO₃, 0.4 < x < 1, were studied using optical microscopy, supplemented by chemical methods, photoelectron spectroscopy, electron microscopy, etc. The birefringent, multidomain structure of the bronze is exhibited by a sodium-deficient, epitaxial surface film and hence is not, as reported elsewhere, a bulk property. The film can be synthesized by anodic electrolysis in alkaline solution and can exist only epitaxially with t… more

The Separation of Trace Amounts of Radioactive Cs From Macro Quanitites of Sodium and Potassium Salts

Description: Summary: A method for the separation of cesium from macro quantities of sodium and potassium using an ion exchange resin, Dowex 50, has been developed. A 95% recovery of cesium with a reduction of the solid content of 95% was found possible. Curves illustrating the effect of acidity, column length, and flow rate are presented in the report. The sodium form, hydrogen form and ammonium form of Dowex 50 were investigated; the hydrogen form was found to give the best separation.

Disposal of Radioactive Sodium Waste

Description: Operation of liquid-metal-cooled fast breeder reactors (LMFBRs) will result in production of various quantities of radioactive sodium waste. Two methods have been developed and tested on a small scale for converting this sodium waste to inert compounds suitable for disposal. The first method is direct oxidation of the sodium after dispersal in a silica matrix. The sodium is mixed with silica and oxidized in a rotary drum reactor. The product is suitable for making glass when other stabilizing c… more

Radiative Capture of Protons in Ne²⁰

Description: Abstract: "A preliminary measurement of the Ne²⁰(p,γ)Na²¹ reaction cross section has been made. Targets were prepared by bombarding aluminum targets with neon ions. The neon concentration in the target was determined by elastic scattering of 1.5-Mev-protons. The yield of positrons from the reaction Ne²⁰(p,γ)Na²¹(β)Ne²¹ was identified by the 23-second half life of Na²¹."

Variational Wave Function for Sodium

Description: The practical method of applying the variation principle to the calculation of the energy of an atom demands a trial function which contains variable parameters. The previous work done using this approach was based on the use of some combination of hydrogenic wave functions containing parameters inserted in appropriate places. The present calculation of the energy of the eleven-electron atom has been brought about using this method.

Pressure-Volume-Temperature Measurements on Solids

Description: From abstract: "The results of recent measurements on the equations of state of sodium and xenon are discussed. The experimental data for each of these are analyzed to show that the isothermal compressibility is solely a function of volume within experimental accuracy. The basic differences between the low temperature PV relationships for sodium and xenon are shown to be easily understandable in terms of the elementary theories of these substances. The range of experimental pressures (to 20 kba… more

Sodium Separation From Biological Material

Description: This study is part of a research into trace element physiology of fresh water snails. As an average, biological materials contain [approximately] o.0% (fresh weight) NaCl ; this means [approximately] 3540 mg Na/1 (in snails, 0.4% NaCl [approximately] ms/1). Under these conditions, the application of neutron activation plus gamma spectrum analysis for the study of most trace elements as a routine method, is difficult. We will narrow down the scope some more and consider only the interference be… more

Failure Test of a Double Chambered NaK-Filled Irradiation Capsule

Description: Report describing tests "in which a double chambered irradiation capsule containing NaK (sodium-potassium alloy) in its inner chamber was deliberately perforated to allow NaK (the heat transfer medium) and water to react within the capsule chambers" (p. 2). The report includes descriptions of the materials used in the tests, test procedures, and results.
