Testing program for determining the mechanical properties of concrete to temperatures of 621/sup 0/C

Description: Concrete temperatures in a Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor (LMFBR) in excess of normal code limits can result from postulated large sodium spills in equipment cells. Elevated temperature concrete property data which may have application for providing a basis for the design and evaluation of such postulated accident conditions is limited. Data thus needed to be developed commensurate with LMFBR plant applications for critical physical and mechanical concrete properties under prototypic thermal… more

Acoustic measurements of the boiling stability tests on THORS sodium loop. [LMFBR]

Description: Acoustic data of boiling stability tests on the THORS (Thermal-Hydraulic Out-of-Reactor Safety) facility were obtained using three sodium-immersible high temperature microphones. The data was analyzed in both the time and frequency domains and provides the following information: (1) the acoustic signal due to sodium boiling was clearly observed; (2) the signal level and the repetition rate of boiling pulses are directly proportional to the applied heat flux; (3) a typical boiling pulse consists… more

Coarse-node computations with an adaptive node structure

Description: The analysis with COMMIX of liquid metal reactor (LMR) intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) transients that are characterized by low flows, and especially imbalanced low flows, shows that if a coarse-node structure is used the predicted temperatures are significantly different than those given by a fine-node structure. If a fine-node structure is used, for problems that involve a large part of the plant, the computation time becomes excessive. This paper presents an improved version of an adaptive… more

Niagara Falls Storage Site, Lewiston, New York: Annual site environmental report, Calendar year 1987: Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP)

Description: The monitoring program at the Niagara Falls Storage Site (NFSS) measures radon gas concentrations in air; external gamma radiation levels; and uranium and radium concentrations in surface water, groundwater, and sediment. To verify that the site is in compliance with the DOE radiation protection standard and to assess its potential effect on public health, the radiation dose was calculated for the maximally exposed individual. Based on the conservative scenario described in the report, this ind… more

High-temperature of thermodynamic properties of sodium

Description: The set of high-temperature thermodynamic properties for sodium in the two-phase and subcooled-liquid regions which was previously recommended, has been modified to incorporate recent experimental data. In particular, replacement of the previously estimated critical constants with experimentally-determined values has resulted in substantial differences in the region of the critical point. The following thermodynamic properties were determined: pressure, density, enthalpy, entropy, internal ener… more

Sodium compatibility of HT-9 and Fe-9Cr-1Mo steels

Description: Ferritic steels have been receiving significant attention for possible use as steam generator tubing, and as alternate structural materials for liquid-metal heat-transport systems in commercial fast reactors, fusion reactors, etc. The materials are chosen on the basis of their high thermal conductivity, resistance to stress-corrosion-cracking in aqueous and steam environments, favorable fabricability and fairly low cost. These steels are available in several classes based on the microstructure … more

Effect of cation exchange on the subsequent reactivity of lignite chars to steam. [108 references]

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to determine the role which cations in coal play in the subsequent reactivity of chars. It is hoped that this investigation will aid in an understanding of the catalytic nature of inorganic constituents in coal during its gasification. It was found that increased heat treatment temperature decreased reactivity. The decrease in reactivity was shown to be due, at least in part, to the changes in the nature of the cation with increased heat treatment temperatur… more

Sampling and characterization of sodium-water reaction products

Description: Sodium-water reaction products (SWRP) which had accumulated in the bottom of the reaction products tank (RPT) of the Large Leak Test Rig (LLTR) were sampled and characterized. Analysis showed that the SWRP consisted of NaOH, Na/sub 2/O, NaH, and Na, as expected, in varying proportions. The unreacted sodium in the samples examined ranged from 32 to 60% by weight. The SWRP reacts (dissolves) rapidly and completely with ethanol, and somewhat less rapidly and completely with Dowanol PM. A magnetic,… more

Physicochemical basis of the Na-K-Ca geothermometer

Description: Regular changes in solution composition were observed experimentally during granite reaction with dilute NaCl (+CaCl/sub 2/) solutions; these changes closely follow the empirical Na-K-Ca geothermometer relationship. Initial minerals forming the granite (quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, and biotite) were etched by the reactions. Alteration phases formed include calcium-zeolite at <300/sup 0/C, feldspar overgrowths at >300/sup 0/C, and minor amounts of clay and calcsilicate at all temperatures. A… more

Silicon halide-alkali metal flames as a source of solar grade silicon. Second quarterly report, September 1--November 30, 1977

Description: The experimental effort on this program has concentrated thus far on Na/SiCl/sub 4/ and K/SiCl/sub 4/ opposed jet diffusion flames in an evacuated reaction vessel; both reactants are supplied as vapors. The flames are self-igniting, fast burning and intensely chemiluminescent. Solid reaction products have been collected, separated by simple washing, and some preliminary analyses performed which indicate that the concentrations of most impurities in the reagents are reduced during the course of … more

Liquid metal corrosion considerations in alloy development

Description: Liquid metal corrosion can be an important consideration in developing alloys for fusion and fast breeder reactors and other applications. Because of the many different forms of liquid metal corrosion (dissolution, alloying, carbon transfer, etc.), alloy optimization based on corrosion resistance depends on a number of factors such as the application temperatures, the particular liquid metal, and the level and nature of impurities in the liquid and solid metals. The present paper reviews the va… more

Description: A 30-Mwt prototype sodium-to-sodium intermediate heat exchanger and a 30-Mwt prototype sodium-heated steam generator were tested in combined operation in its Sodium Components Test Installation. This report contains the results of test and evaluation of the steam generator. During plant performance tests, performance degradation was observed, which resulted in the initiation of a diagnostic test series. This test series revealed that under certain operating conditions, the thermohydraulic chara… more
