An Experimental Evaluation of the Radiation Protection Afforded by a Large Modern Concrete Office Building

Description: Abstract: "An experimental study was made to determine the effective shielding provided by a modern reinforced-concrete office building (AEC Headquarters building) from nuclear fallout. Pocket ionization chambers were used for measurement of the radiation-field strength. Fallout was simulated with distributed and point-source configurations of Co-60 and Ir-192 sources. Four typical sections were selected for study, and experiments were performed on each. These included an external wing with exp… more

Nuclear Merchant Ship Reactor Shield Design Summary Report

Description: Abstract: "Most of the Nuclear Merchant Ship Reactor (NMSR) shield design work performed by The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) is summarized. Primary and secondary shield results are presented, consistent with contractual requirements and designated design criteria. Methods of calculation and basic parameters are shown" (p. 1).

EXREM III computer code for estimating external radiation doses to populations from environmental releases

Description: EXREM III is a computer code to estimate the dose equivalent rate and the total dose equivalent from beta, positron, electron, and gamma radintion resulting from submersion in contaminated water, submersion in contaminated air, and exposure to a contaminated surface. There can be more than one environmental release, and exposure can begin at any time after the first release. EXREM III considers contributions from environmental releases and from nuclide decay chains. For a particular problem the… more

Energy Deposition by 45-GeV Photons in H, Be, Al, Cu, and Ta

Description: Electron--photon cascade calculations have been carried out for zero- width beams of 45-GeV photons normally incident on semi-infinite slabs of hydrogen, beryllium, aluminum, copper, and tantalum. The energy deposition is given as a function of both depth and radius in the slabs. (auth)

Uniform dose distribution with moving negative pion beams

Description: Dense ionization in the stopping region as negative pions come to rest in matter makes them attractive for treatment of cancer. Pions of the same energy have essentially the same range in matter which means that a monoenergetic beam will produce a Bragg peak region of maximum ionization as they come to rest. In cancer therapy, the entire treatment volume should be exposed, if possible, to the Bragg peak. A distribution of energy and adjustment of lateral dimensions could theoretically adjust th… more

Nuclear chemistry research. Annual progress report, 1 January--31 December 1973

Description: Work is reported in the following areas: calculation of electron capture and loss cross section of /sup 11/B in B; determination of /sup 6/Li and /sup 9/ Be charge states; solution of the capture-loss equations for the cross sections; capture-loss cross sections of B and C ions; charges of recoils from heavy-ion reactions; and search for alpha activity in medium-heavy elements. Advances in experimental techniques are also recounted. Four of the papers are separately title listed. (RWR)
