Wing-tunnel investigation at low transonic speeds of the effects of number of wings on the lateral-control effectiveness of an RM-5 test vehicle

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of number of wings on the aileron rolling effectiveness of an RM-5 test vehicle using the free-rolling wind-tunnel testing technique through a speed range to Mach number 0.9. The wings tested had neither taper nor sweepback and were equipped with full-span 20-percent-chord sealed and faired ailerons. Results indicated that increasing the number of wings resulted in a decrease in rolling effectiveness so that results obtained from the test of the three-wing model were closer to conventional-airplane-configuration results than the four-wing data.

Free-flight investigation at Mach numbers between 0.5 and 1.7 of the zero-lift rolling effectiveness and drag of various surface, spoiler, and jet controls on an 80 degree delta-wing missile

Description: Report presenting a free-flight investigation of the zero-lift rolling effectiveness and drag of 18 roll-control arrangements on a cruciform 80 degree delta-wing missile-like configuration over a range of Mach numbers. Testing was made of deflected surfaces, spoilers, and inlet-air-jet devices to give evidence to simple theory for deflected surfaces and to determine some effects of chordwise location for spoilers and blowing direction and spanwise location for jets near the wing trailing edge. All controls were found to be satisfactory roll-producing devices except canards located immediately forward of the main wings and spoilers.

Langley full-scale-tunnel investigation of the factors affecting the static lateral-stability characteristics of a typical fighter-type airplane

Description: "The factors that affect the rate of change of rolling moment with yaw of a typical fighter-type airplane were investigated in the Langley full-scale tunnel on a typical fighter-type airplane. Eight representative flight conditions were investigated in detail. The separate effects of propeller operation, of the wing-fuselage combination, and of the vertical tail to the effective dihedral of the airplane in each condition were determined. The results of the tests showed that for the airplane with the propeller removed, the wing-fuselage combination had positive dihedral effect which increased considerably with increasing angle of attack for all conditions" (p. 1).

Effect of taper ratio on the low-speed rolling stability derivatives of swept and unswept wings of aspect ratio 2.61

Description: Results of tests conducted in the 6-foot-diameter rolling-flow test section of the Langley stability tunnel to determine the effects of varying taper ratio on the rolling and static stability characteristics of a swept wing are presented; results are also given for the effects of varying taper ratio on an unswept wing and for the effects of sweep on a tapered wing. All the models were of aspect ratio 2.61 and had NACA 0012 sections normal to the quarter-chord line. Taper ratios of 1.00, 0.50, and 0.25 and sweep angles of 0 degrees and 45 degrees were investigated.

A Simplified Method for Assessing the Effect of Steady Rolling on Angle of Attack and Sideslip
