International Programs and Agreements in Geothermal Energy. An Interim report

Description: This report contains the interim results of a study for the Division of Geothermal Energy on the Division's international programs and activities. The complete research program, which is scheduled to be finished i November 1978, will have the following elements: (1) an assessment of objectives that have motivated the formulation of international programs and an explanation of any changes in the evolution of those programs. These objectives will be assessed for their internal consistency, degree… more

Federal Geothermal Research Program Update Fiscal Year 1999

Description: The Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessors have conducted research and development (R&D) in geothermal energy since 1971. To develop the technology needed to harness the Nation's vast geothermal resources, DOE's Office of Geothermal and Wind Technologies oversees a network of national laboratories, industrial contractors, universities, and their subcontractors. The following mission and goal statements guide the overall activities of the Office of Geothermal and Wind Technologies. … more

An assessment of leadership in geothermal energy technology research and development

Description: Geothermal energy is one of the more promising renewable energy technologies because it is environmentally benign and, unlike most renewable energy sources, can provide base power. This report provides an assessment of the research and development (R&D) work underway in geothermal energy in the following countries: Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, and the United Kingdom. While the R&D work underway in the US exceeds the R&D efforts of the other countries, the lead is eroding. Thi… more

34th Geothermal Coordinating Group Meeting

Description: Chairman William Ogle said the overall purpose of the meeting was to consider how the US government, and the Division of Geothermal Energy in particular, might apply its geothermal effort more effectively. Given the present situation, how does Uncle Sam make the best possible effort? On this theme, there are 4 main subquestions: (1) what government support is needed? (2) how can we improve cooperation between industry, the national laboratories, universities, and industries, and does it matter?… more

Session 5: Heat Cycle Research, Multi-Year Program (Excerpt for DOE Program Review Meeting, October 11-13, 1983)

Description: The current binary Heat Cycle Research Program (HCRF) is part of an overall long range program that was defined in 1980, and consists of the following basic elements: (1) conduct analytical and experimental studies aimed at identifying means to increase performance of organic Rankine power cycle and remove restrictions which limit performance; (2) obtain detailed thermal performance data of direct contact heat exchangers and the effect of this mode of heat transfer on the remainder of the syste… more

Geothermal Technology Evolution Rationale for the National Energy Strategy

Description: The DOE developed ''Technology Evolution Rationale'' documents for many of its technology development programs, at this time (report is dated October 1, 1990). This is a very significant description of the status of resources, technology, and industry in 1990, and the thinking that guided the DOE Geothermal Research Program at this time. The report describes: Geothermal energy conversion and use technologies, Resources and land use, Stakeholder and users, Industry status, and Market acceptance … more

Development of bushings and bearings for use in hot brine pumps

Description: The exploitation of geothermal resources often requires that naturally heated subterranean brines be pumped to the surface from depths of up to 6000 feet underground while minimizing heat losses and maintaining sufficient fluid pressure to prevent boiling. To accomplish this requires the use of downhole brine pumps capable of months of uninterrupted operation. Significant problems have occurred with pump lineshaft bearings in the geothermal wells. The objective of this research program was to d… more
