Experiments With a Wing From Which the Boundary Layer Is Removed by Pressure or Suction

Description: With an unsymmetrical wing and a rotating Magnus cylinder, the lift is produced by the superposition of parallel and circulatory flows. An explanation of the circulatory flow is furnished by the boundary-layer theory of Prandtl and the consequent vortex formation. According to this explanation, it must evidently be possible to increase the circulation either by increasing the size of the stronger (lower) vortex or by decreasing the size of the weaker (upper) vortex.

Effectiveness of boundary-layer removal near throat of ramp-type side inlet at free-stream Mach number of 2.0

Description: Report presenting the effect of removal of the boundary layer inside the inlet on the performance of a twin-duct side-air-intake system in the 8- by 6-foot supersonic wind tunnel at a free-stream Mach number of 2.0. Results regarding the internal performance characteristics of inlets, supercritical mass-flow ratio, diffuser total-pressure recovery, and effect of bleeding the boundary layer are provided.

Recall of Legislators and the Removal of Members of Congress from Office

Description: Under the United States Constitution and congressional practice, Members of Congress may have their services ended prior to the normal expiration of their constitutionally established terms of office by their resignation or death, or by action of the house of Congress in which they are a Member by way of an "expulsion," or by a finding that in accepting a subsequent "incompatible" public office, the Member would be deemed to have vacated his congressional seat. This report discusses the manner in which a Member of Congress may be removed from office by "expulsion," and then examines the issue of "recall" of legislators.

CSER 97-001 Criticality safety limits for PFP 26-inch vacuum lineremoval

Description: As part of the plutonium stabilization operations in the 234-5Z Building, several runs of 26-inch (26 inches of Hg) process vacuum header, along with associated smaller piping is to be cut into sections and disposed of. This criticality safety evaluation report (CSER) requested by Nirider (1996) addresses the removal of several hundred feet of abandoned 3 and 4 inch nominal diameter vacuum header and associated smaller diameter piping runs located in the duct level of the 234-5Z Building in rooms 262, 263, and 264 as shown in the two attached drawings.

ITP Filtrate Benzene Removal Alternatives

Description: Existing ITP filtrate hold tanks may provide sufficient capacity and residence time to strip dissolved benzene from the incoming filtrate using nitrogen sparging in the bottom of the old tanks. This is based on equilibrium supported by late Wash test data using aged washed slurry. Theoretical considerations indicate that benzene stripping will be more difficult from the ITP unwashed high salt filtrates due to reduced mass transfer. Therefore experimental sparging data is needed to quantify the theoretical effects.Foaming limits which dictate allowable sparging rate will also have to be established. Sparging in the hold tanks will require installation of sintered metal spargers, and possibly stirrers and foam monitoring/disengagement equipment. The most critical sparging needs are at the start of the precipitation/concentration cycle, when the filtrate flux rate is the highest,and at the end of wash cycle where Henry`s equilibrium constant falls off,requiring more gas to sparge the dissolved benzene. With adequate recycle (for proper distribution) or sparging in the old tanks, the 30 inch column could be used for the complete ITP process. A courser packing would reduce back pressure while enabling benzene stripping. The Late Wash Tests indicate adequate benzene stripping even at reduced gas flow. This will require experimental verification under ITP conditions. Using the 30 in. column vs 18 in. during the wash cycle will enhance stripping without need for additional sparging provided the minimum flow requirements are met.

Analysis of interaction phenomena between liquid jets and materials

Description: The interaction phenomena of high-velocity liquid jets impinging on a material surface have been investigated theoretically and experimentally to gain an understanding of the physical mechanisms involved in material removal by fluidjet machining processes. Experiments were performed to determine conditions under which the liquid jet impacting a solid material will cause material removal and also to delineate possible physical mechanisms of mass removal at optimum jet-cutting conditions. We have also carried out numerical simulations of jet-induced surface pressure rises and of the material deformation and spallation behavior due to multiple droplet impacts. Results obtained from the experiments and theoretical calculations and their physical implications are also discussed.

Polymer pendant crown thioethers for removal of mercury from acidic wastes

Description: Removal and immobilization of mercury ions from industrial waste streams is a difficult and expensive problem requiring an efficient and selective extractant that is resistant to corrosive conditions. We have now developed an acid-resistant thiacrown polymer that has potential utility as a selective and cost-effective Hg<sup>2+</sup> extractant. Copolymerization of a novel C-substituted thiacrown, N,N-(4-vinylbenzylmethyl)-2-aminomethyl- ,4,&l 1,14- pentathiacycloheptadecane, with DVB (80% divinylbenzene) using a radical initiator generated a highly cross-linked polymer containing pendant thiacrowns. Mercury extraction capabilities of the polymer were tested in acidic media (pH range: 1.5 to 6.2) and the extraction of Hg<sup>2+</sup> was determined to be 95<sup>+</sup>% with a mixing time of 30 minutes. The thiacrown polymer was also determined to be selective for Hg*+, competing ions such as Pb<sup>2+</sup>, Cd<sup>2+</sup>, A1<sup>3+</sup>, and Fe<sup>3+</sup>. even in the presence of high concentrations of The bound Hg<sup>2+</sup> ions can then be stripped from the polymer, allowing the polymer to be reused without significant loss of loading capacity.

Comparison of Several Methods of Cyclic De-Icing of a Gas-Heated Airfoil

Description: "Several methods of cyclic de-icing of a gas-heated airfoil were investigated to determine ice-removal characteristics and heating requirements. The cyclic de-icing system with a spanwise ice-free parting strip in the stagnation region and a constant-temperature gas-supply duct gave the quickest and most reliable ice removal. Heating requirements for the several methods of cyclic de-icing are compared, and the savings over continuous ice prevention are shown. Data are presented to show the relation of surface temperature, rate of surface heating, and heating time to the removal of ice" (p. 1).

Investigation at a Mach number of 1.90 of a diverter-type boundary-layer removal system for a scoop inlet

Description: Report presenting an experimental investigation at Mach number 1.90 to determine the effect of a diverter-type boundary-layer removal system on the performance of a scoop inlet. The supersonic portion of the inlet consisted of a two-dimensional, reverse Prandtl-Meyer turn followed by a constant-area throat. Results regarding the effect of fuselage position and subsonic diffuser performance are provided.
