Plutonium Safety Training Course

Description: This course seeks to achieve two objectives: to provide initial safety training for people just beginning work with plutonium, and to serve as a review and reference source for those already engaged in such work. Numerous references have been included to provide information sources for those wishing to pursue certain topics more fully. The first part of the course content deals with the general safety approach used in dealing with hazardous materials. Following is a discussion of the four prope… more

An Evaluation of Alternative Reactor Vessel Cutting Technologies for the Experimental Boiling Water Reactor at Argonne National Laboratory

Description: Metal cutting techniques that can be used to segment the reactor pressure vessel of the Experimental Boiling Water Reactor (EBWR) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) have been evaluated by Nuclear Energy Services. Twelve cutting technologies are described in terms of their ability to perform the required task, their performance characteristics, environmental and radiological impacts, and cost and schedule considerations. Specific recommendations regarding which technology should ultimately be … more

Free Convection in the SIR Mark A Rotating Plugs

Description: This technical report is intended as a brief description of the free convection problem existing in the various annuli of the SIR Mark A rotating plugs. It is by no means a complete report of the plug "hot tests", but merely records some of the more significant experimental observations and presents a few of the theories and calculations made to explain the observed free convection phenomenon. The general discussion which follows is chronological. Details of analyses are relegated to the Appen… more

D. R. Dolly Instruction Book

Description: Instruction book for the DR Dolly. "The DR Dolly is a unit which is designed to perform various mechanical operations which a man would otherwise perform if he were able to work safely in the area where the Dolly is to operate. It consists of six mechanical components mounted on a steel car which in turn runs back and forth on rails. The car simply forms a movable platform for the following components, which are: a 36" mirror, a mechanical arm and various hands, two valve turners, a ram, and a … more

Topsy: a Remotely Controlled Machine for the Study of Critical Assemblies

Description: This report describes the construction, operation, and typical uses of Topsy, the versatile, remotely controlled, critical assembly machine at Pajarito. Section 1 covers the mechanical design of the machine, and the hydraulic and electrical operation of the various components. Section 2 describes how Topsy is used for investigating reacting metal assemblies. Procedures for establishing a delayed critical configuration and operation at delayed critical are illustrated for the oralloy-tuballoy sy… more

Remote Control Equipment for Plutonium Metal Production

Description: Design and construction of remote control equipment for plutonium metal production are described. Criteria for the design of the equipment included the following: rubber gloves were to be completely eliminated; all mechanisms were to be built as integral units to facilitate replacement through use of the plastic- bag technique; no accessory equipment such as switches, valves, piping, or cylinders were to be inside the contaminated enclosure unless required to handle the plutonium; and all units… more

Design of the Argonne Low Power Reactor (ALPR)

Description: Report containing "[a] description (...) of the design of a prototype "packaged" nuclear power plant. The purpose of the plant is to alleviate fuel oil logistics and storage problems posed by remote auxiliary DEW Line radar stations north of the Arctic Circle. The ALPR (redesignated SL-1) is a 3 Mwt, heterogeneous, highly enriched uranium- fueled, natural-circulation boiling water reactor, cooled and moderated with light water. Steam at 300 psig, dry and saturated (421 deg F) is passed directly… more

Description and Proposed Operation of the Fuel Cycle Facility for the Second Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR-II)

Description: Report regarding "[t]he Fuel Cycle Facility for the Second Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR-II), the process equipment, and the operations to be conducted in the facility are described. The Fuel Cycle Facility is a plant for reprocessing, by pyro-metallurgical methods, the core and blanket material discharged from EBR-II. The reactor core alloy is uranium-5 percent fissium and contains about 46 wt.% Uranium-235 . The blanket material consists of uranium in which plutonium is bred. Core and bla… more

Recording Surface Condition By Replication

Description: Surface finish of plutonium pieces is of importance and is difficult to evaluate directly because of the handling limitations imposed by its toxicity and radioactivity. Efforts were therefore directed towards finding a surface examination method suitable for such applications. The Faxfilm replication scheme described in this report is the result.
