A Storm Water Runoff Investigation Using Gis and Remote Sensing

Description: Environmental controls are becoming more and more expensive to implement, so environmental management is becoming more technologically advanced and efficient through the adoption of new techniques and models. This paper reviews the potential for storm water runoff for the city of Denton, Texas and with the main objective to perform storm water runoff analyses for three different land use datasets; each landuse dataset created with a different methodology. Also analyzed was the difference between two North Central Texas Council of Governments land use datasets and my own land use dataset as a part of evaluating new and emerging remote sensing techniques. The results showed that new remote sensing techniques can help to continually monitor changes within watersheds by providing more accurate data.

Application of Thermal Imagery and Aerial Photography to Hydrologic Studies of Karst Terrane in Missouri

Description: From abstract: Planning waste-disposal facilities and impoundments is complicated by karst carbonate terrane in the Ozarks. Thermal imagery (8-13 micrometer wavelength) and color infrared photography aid in identifying losing streams, sinkholes and hydrologic conditions encouraging collapse. Imagery and photography were acquired in Greene and Reynold Counties, Mo., in March 1972 and June 1973. Differences in thermal levels correlating with losing and gaining reaches of Logan Creek valley, Reynolds County, were not visually apparent in predawn March imagery but statistical analysis of predawn magnetic-tape data indicated greater variance in emitted energy from the losing reach than from the gaining reach.

Video Processing of Remote Sensor Data Applied to Uranium Exploration in Wyoming: Final Report

Description: From introduction: This study is a comprehensive investigation of altered sandstone associated with uranium deposits near Pumpkin Buttes in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming, and the detection of such alteration using remote sensing technology. The purpose of this study is two-fold: 1) to develop video image processing techniques that will preferentially enhance areas of alteration associated with uranium deposits and enable mapping of these areas, and 2) to investigate the spectral, geochemical, and mineralogical characteristics of altered areas which make them detectable on remote sensor data. Once these video processing techniques have been defined, they may be applied as exploration tools to new areas with similar surface and geological environments. In this way, remote sensing can serve as a valuable tool for uranium exploration.

A Generic Procedure for BRDF Normalization of Remotely Sensed Data

Description: A generic procedure for Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) normalization for airborne multispectral images has been developed and implemented as an add-on module of ENVI at the U.S. Department of Energy's Remote Sensing Laboratory. The main advantage of this procedure is that it does not require multiple image acquisitions over the same area for establishing empirical BRDF functions.

Aerial Gamma Ray and Magnetic Survey, Raton Basin Project, The Flagstaff Quadrangle of Arizona: Final Report, Volume 1

Description: From Operations: For the Flagstaff quadrangle, a total of 1930 line miles, excluding reflights and overlaps and missing data were flown by the Tracker and 1348 line miles were flown by the helicopter. The production summary presented below and the detailed daily production in Appendix B describes half of the total project. The Raton Basin Project, of which this quadrangle is a part, covered five other 10 x 2 quadrangles which was or will be covered in separate reports.

Description: From abstract "As part of the Department of Energy (DoE) National Uranium Resource Evaluation Program, LKB Resources, Inc. has performed a rotary-wing reconnaissance high sensitivity radiometric and magnetic survey, encompassing several 1:250,000 quadrangles in southwestern Arizona and southeastern California. The surveyed area consisted of approximately 9300 line miles. The radiometric data was corrected and normalized to 400 feet terrain clearance. The data was identified as to rock type by correlating the data samples with existing geologic maps. Statistics defining the mean and standard deviation of each rock type are presented as listings in Volume I of this report. The departure of the data from its corresponding mean rock type is computed in terms of standard deviation units and is presented graphically as anomaly maps in Volume II and as computer listings in microfiche form in Volume I."

Measurement Strategies for Remote Sensing Applications

Description: Remote sensing has grown to encompass many instruments and observations, with concomitant data from a huge number of targets. As evidenced by the impressive growth in the number of published papers and presentations in this field, there is a great deal of interest in applying these capabilities. The true challenge is to transition from directly observed data sets to obtaining meaningful and robust information about remotely sensed targets. We use physics-based end-to-end modeling and analysis techniques as a framework for such a transition. Our technique starts with quantified observables and signatures of a target. The signatures are propagated through representative atmospheres to realistically modeled sensors. Simulated data are then propagated through analysis routines, yielding measurements that are directly compared to the original target attributes. We use this approach to develop measurement strategies which ensure that our efforts provide a balanced approach to obtaining substantive information on our targets.
