New computer-controlled precipitator at the Savannah River Plant

Description: A new plutonium triflouride preciptation facility was successfully started up on the first attempt May 13, 1987 at the Savannah River Plant (SRP). This new facility provided a 75% reduction in radiation exposure, a substantial improvement in process performance, and elimination of the major SRP process bottleneck. This was accomplished through sound engineering, improved process control, process automation, and extensive testing of components, assemblies, and entire system prior to ''… more

Mechanical design issues associated with mounting, maintenance, and handling of an ITER divertor

Description: Several designs that address plasma-facing plate configurations and thermal-hydraulic design issues have been developed for the ITER divertor. Design criteria growing out of physics requirements, physical constraints, and remote handling requirements impose severe mechanical requirements on the support structure and its attachments. These pose a challenge to the mechanical design of a divertor, which must be addressed before a functional divertor is practical -- that is, one that can be remotel… more

Ex-vessel remote maintenance development plans for the Burning Plasma Experiment

Description: Remote maintenance (RM) is fundamental to the basic design requirements of the Burning Plasma Experiment (BPX), and an extensive RM development and demonstration program is planned to meet these requirements. The program first draws from the experience base that exists in the fission community and Europe's Joint European Torus (JET) Project. Successful solutions are applied where possible and, in many cases, improved in order to achieve the performance demanded by a multiyear program that must … more

Developing maintainability for tokamak fusion power systems. Phase I report. Volume I. Study results

Description: The overall purpose of the study is to identify design features of tokamak fusion power reactors which contribute to the achievement of high levels of maintainability. In this first phase, the principal emphasis is on scheduled maintenance whose frequency is determined by the life of the reactor first wall/blanket. Remote operations are baselined. Five conceptual reactor designs have been analyzed. Each concept is characterized by the size of the replaceable first wall/blanket module--large, in… more

Los Alamos upgrade in metallographic capabilities

Description: The Los Alamos Wing 9 Hot Cell Facility is in the process of upgrading their metallographic sample preparation and examination capability. The present capability to grind, polish and etch samples from reactor fuels and materials has been in operation for 18 years. Macro photography and alpha and beta-gamma autoradiography are an important part of this capability. Some of the fast breeder reactor experiments have contained sodium as a coolant. Therefore, the capability to distill sodium from som… more

Remotely operated organic liquid waste incinerator for the fuels and materials examination facility

Description: The search for a practical method for the disposal of small quantities of oraganic liquid waste, a waste product of metallographic sample preparation at the Fuels and Materials Examination Facility has led to the design of an incinerator/off-gas system to burn organic liquid wastes and selected organic solids. The incinerator is to be installed in a shielded inert-atmosphere cell, and will be remotely operated and maintained. The off-gas system is a wet-scrubber and filter system designed to re… more

Combined long reach and dexterous manipulation for waste storage tank applications

Description: One of the highest priority environmental restoration tasks within the Department of Energy (DOE) is the remediation of single-shell waste storage tanks (WSTs), especially those suspected of, or documented as, leakers. Most currently proposed approaches for remediation of large underground WSTs require application of remotely operated long-reach (greater than 10 m), high-lift capacity (greater than 200 kg) manipulator systems. Because of the complexity of in-tank hardware, waste forms, remediat… more

Remote characterization of spent LWR fuel for geologic disposal demonstrations

Description: State-of-the-art hot cell examination techniques are being used to evaluate spent fuel performance during exposure to simulated geologic repository environments. Forty-five pressurized light water reactor fuel rods were examined prior to emplacement in geologic disposal tests. Sufficient data were collected on both cladding and fuel to provide a basis, along with post-test examination data, for assessing the ability of the spent fuel to retain radionuclides.

Description: The Burning Plasma Experiment (BPX), to be located at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, is the next major experimental machine in the US Fusion Program. It will be fueled with deuterium-tritium (D-T) that, when burned, will generate high-energy neutrons. This will activate the various materials used in construction of the machine, which will result in high levels of gamma radiation. Any subsequent maintenance activities on the machine or in the test cell area must be performed remotely. The … more

Prediction of centrifugal pump-cleaning ability in waste sludge

Description: Radioactive waste at the Savannah River Plant (SRP) is being transferred from older waste tanks to new, stress-relieved tanks for more effective waste management. The technology developed for waste removal involves the use of long-shaft, recirculating, centrifugal pumps (slurry pumps). Testing completed at the Savannah River Laboratory's 30-meter-diameter mock-up waste tank related the effective cleaning radius (ECR) of a slurry pump to critical pump and materials characteristics. Evaluation of remote smearing of DWPF canistered waste forms

Description: The Savannah River Site (SRS) is evaluating the variables of the remote smearing process for monitoring transferable contamination on the waste glass canisters at the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF). Smearing for transferable contamination is typically done by hand, but in this case, due to the nature of the high level waste within the canisters, remote smearing is required. The effectiveness of the smear pad was determined under varying conditions (distance traveled, force applied, an… more
