Hot helium flow test facility summary report

Description: This report summarizes the results of a study conducted to assess the feasibility and cost of modifying an existing circulator test facility (CTF) at General Atomic Company (GA). The CTF originally was built to test the Delmarva Power and Light Co. steam-driven circulator. This circulator, as modified, could provide a source of hot, pressurized helium for high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) and gas-cooled fast breeder reactor (GCFR) component testing. To achieve this purpose, a high-temp… more

Assessment of light water reactor fuel damage during a reactivity initiated accident

Description: This paper presents an assessment of LWR fuel damage during a reactivity initiated accident and comments on the adequacy of the present USNRC design requirements. Results from early SPERT tests are reviewed and compared with results from recent computer simulations and PBF tests. A progression of fuel rod and cladding damage events is presented. High strain rate deformation of relatively cool irradiated cladding early in the transient may result in fracture at a radial average peak fuel enthalp… more

Modified Purification System Performance Test. Core 1, Seed 2. Test Results T-641124-A. Section 2

Description: The effectiveness of purification in controlling plant radioactivation rates was determined through comparison of the actual effects produced from plant operation with and without purification. With the purification system in service, there was no appreciable difficulty in maintaining the reactor coolant within reference water specifications. In addition, there was no discernible increase of crud deposition in the coolant system as determined by direct radiation measurements of the purification… more

WELDING AND BRAZING OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE RADIATORS AND HEAT EXCHANGERS

Description: Procedures were developed for fabricating highperformance radiators and heat exchangers for the Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion (ANP) Program. These components, which contain multitudes of tube-to-tube sheet and tube-to-fin joints, are similar in design to those under consideration for a variety of space vehicle applications. In order to ensure reliability of the tube-to-tube sheet joints, techniques producing welds of extremely high quality were used and back brazing of the welds with a suitable a… more

De-entrainment on vertical elements in air droplet cross flow. [PWR]

Description: De-entrainment phenomena on vertical elements in air-water droplet cross flow are generated using a horizontal array of water spray nozzles and a draft-induced wind tunnel. These conditions are used to obtain experimental values of the de-entrainment efficiency of isolated elements (25.4-, 63.5-, and 101.6-mm-diam cylinders and a 76.2-mm-square tube), and of an array of 101.6-mm-diam cylinders. A flow model is developed that extrapolates the de-entrainment efficiency of isolated elements throug… more

Severe accident core heatup transients in modular high temperature gas-cooled reactors without operating Reactor Cavity Cooling Systems

Description: The ultimate decay heat removal system for the current Modular High Temperature Gas-Cooled reactors is a completely passive natural convection air cooling loop. This paper considers an extremely remote accident scenario, where even this passive system fails, and heat rejection is only via a layer of thermal insulation to the reactor silo structure and the surrounding soil. The results show that even in this case the peak fuel temperatures remain well within safe limits. However, vessel and conc… more

Solar-thermal energy conversion and storage: cyclohexane dehydrogenation. Progress report, 30 September 1977-30 June 1978

Description: The objective of this project is to provide research support for the benzene/cyclohexane heat pipe development program at Sandia. The kinetics of the cyclohexane decomposition (energy collection) reaction over a commercially available naphtha reforming catalyst (RD-150, Englehard Industries) in the temperature range 400 to 800/sup 0/F and pressures of 1 to 40 atmospheres were measured. Murgatroyd-an Ibm 7090 Program for the Analysis of the Kinetics of the Msre

Description: The IBM 7090 program Murgatroyd is a revised and extended version of the IBM 704 program PET-I, which solves (by a fifth-order Runge-Kutta procedure) the coupled firstorder differential equations for power, delayed neutron concentration, and temperature in a one-region reactor as a function of time, given an input reactivity variation represented by a series of linear ramps. The basic extensions were those which were necessary to include the effects of the separate heat capacities and temperatu… more

DEVELOPMENT OF A PROCESS FOR SODIUM BONDING OF EBR-II FUEL AND BLANKET ELEMENTS

Description: Procedures for assembling EBR-II fuel elements with annular sodium bonds between the uranium rods and the stainless steel claddings are outlined. The results of several meltdown and uranium-settling experiments are given. Bonding experiments were performed: furnace bonding, submerged canning, ultrasonic bonding, centrifuging, pressure pulsing, and vibratory bonding. Vibratory bonding was chosen for the production of the first EBR-II core. (D.L.C.)

Computation of self-consistent 2-D MHD with neutral-beam and bootstrap currents in elongated plasmas

Description: The observation of substantial current drive from neutral beam injection (NBI) in TFTR, JET and DIII-D has led to renewed interest in a steady state, non-inductively driven tokamak. The discovery of apparently considerable neoclassical (bootstrap) current in TFTR, makes a steady state device even more attractive since the bootstrap portion of the current could be obtained without additional power input. Motivated by these results, we have developed a code, ACCOME, which self-consistently comput… more

Safety rod latch inspection

Description: During an attempt to raise control rods from the 100 K reactor in December, one rod could not be withdrawn. Subsequent investigation revealed that a small button'' in the latch mechanism had broken off of the lock plunger'' and was wedged in a position that prevented rod withdrawal. Concern that this failure may have resulted from corrosion or some other metallurgical problem resulted in a request that SRL examine six typical latch mechanisms from the 100 L reactor by use of radiography and met… more
