Physics implications of oxide and metal fuel on the design of small LMFBR cores

Description: Slower growth projections in the demand for electricity and advances in metal fuel technology have shifted some of the emphasis in fast reactor development in the US from large oxide cores to small cores and also renewed interest in metal fuel. Cores constrained by diameter and fuel burnup exhibit many similar neutronic performance characteristics. However, some parameters such as reactivity coefficients, for example, are very different. The physics parameters of the four cores studied suggest … more

Gas-cooled reactor programs. High-temperature gas-cooled reactor technology development program. Annual progress report, December 31, 1983

Description: ORNL continues to make significant contributions to the national program. In the HTR fuels area, we are providing detailed statistical information on the fission product retention performance of irradiated fuel. Our studies are also providing basic data on the mechanical, physical, and chemical behavior of HTR materials, including metals, ceramics, graphite, and concrete. The ORNL has an important role in the development of improved HTR graphites and in the specification of criteria that need t… more

Analysis of central worths and other integral data from the Los Alamos benchmark assemblies

Description: We have compared theoretical calculations, based on ENDF/B-V and recent revisions, with integral data measured on the Los Alamos unmoderated critical assemblies Godiva, Jezebel, Flattop-25, and Flattop-Pu. The experimental data included in this analysis are multiplication factors k/sub eff/ and (in most cases) both fission rates and central-worth ratios for /sup 235/U, /sup 238/U, /sup 237/Np, and /sup 239/Pu. Based on this comparison, we conclude that there is a need for a new /sup 235/U evalu… more

Benchmark and physics testing of LIFE-4C. Summary

Description: LIFE-4C is a steady-state/transient analysis code developed for performance evaluation of carbide ((U,Pu)C and UC) fuel elements in advanced LMFBRs. This paper summarizes selected results obtained during a crucial step in the development of LIFE-4C - benchmark and physics testing.

Three-dimensional nodal diffusion and transport methods for the analysis of fast-reactor critical experiments

Description: This paper describes two new nodal methods for solving the multigroup neutron diffusion and transport equations in three-dimensional Cartesian geometry. These methods have been developed for the global analysis of fast-reactor critical experiments once cell-averaged multigroup cross sections for each matrix position or drawer have been computed using appropriate cell-homogenization procedures. Brief descriptions of the nodal diffusion and transport schemes are presented, along with results of t… more

ANL analysis of ZPPR-13A

Description: The ZPPR-13 experiments provide basic physics data for radial heterogeneous LMFBR cores of approximately 700MWe size. Assemblies ZPPR-13A, ZPPR-13B and ZPPR-13C comprised the JUPITER-II cooperative program between the U.S. Department of Energy (US DOE) and PNC of Japan. The measurements were made between August 1982 and April 1984. The core designs and the measurements were planned jointly by the two parties with substantial input from U.S. industrial interests to ensure coverage of the design … more
