Design of production test IP-490-A-FP evaluation of diffusion bonded fuel elements

Description: I&E uranium cores are to be jacketed by Sylcor and Hanford utilizing the ``Solid State Diffusion-Hot Pressure Bonding`` process. Hanford will also jacket cores by the ``Solid State Diffusion`` process, by ``Gas Pressure Bonding`` and ``Hot Die Sizing``. In this process, a layer of nickel is placed between the aluminum and uranium to prevent diffusion of the aluminum into the uranium and furnish a layer of metal capable of limiting diffusion with both the aluminum and uranium. The completed fuel… more

In-reactor operating conditions for three charges of KSE-3 elements in the KER loops

Description: The KSE-3 element, a 1.6% enriched Zr-2 Jacketed tubular element nominally 1.74 inch O.D. by 1.05 inch I.D., was designed for irradiation in the KER loops to simulate the behavior of an N-reactor outer fuel tube. Three charges of these fuel elements have been irradiated under PT-IP-363-A: one in KER-2 to 1985 MWD/T, one KER-3 to 3555 MWD/T, and one in KER-4 to 1.195 MWD/T. This document provides the calculated powers and temperatures for each fuel element during the time it was irradiated.

Preliminary hazards review operational charge-discharge for Hanford reactors

Description: The use of the porposed full reactor operational charge-discharge facilities will to some degree change the method of reactor operation from a ``batch`` to a ``continuous`` process. This change in the operational process will require modifications to coolant flow supply and monitoring equipment. Since a continuous and adequate coolant supply is essential to prevention of the release of fission products from the irradiated fuel elements this modification merits a hazards analysis.

Chemical Technology Division, Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report for March 1959

Description: In a preliminary experiment, the integral diffusivity of 1 M FeCl/sub 3/ solution varied uniformly with the fraction difiused: from 0.3 x 10/sup -6/ cm/ sup 2//sec for 10 per cent diffused to 0.8 x 10/sup -6/ for 30 per cent diffused. A short Fluorox run made with crude UF/sub 4/ in the 4-in. fluidized bed showed that UF/sub 6/ could be produced from the impure feed. Denitration of Th(NO/sub 3/)/sub 4/ solutions on fluidized or mechanically agitated beds of ThO/sub 2/ and gave fine ThO/sub 2/ p… more
