Crystalline Field Splittings in Holmium and Dysprosium Ethylsulfates

Description: From report : "It has become apparent that pragmatic resonance data alone are insufficient to correctly evaluate crystal field parameters for rare-earth ethylsulfates, and that heat capacity data above 20°K are a useful aid in determining whether low lying levels obtained by absorption spectroscopy have been correctly identified."

Tricarbalyllic Acid (Propane-1, 2, 3-Tricarboxylic Acid)

Description: From report : "Tricarbalyllic acid (propane-1, 2, 3-tricarboxylic acid) has a structure similar to that of citric acid, except that it lacks the hydroxyl group attached to the middle of the carbon atom. Properties of the rare earth citrates have been used very successfully in the separation of rare earths by ion exchange methods; consequently it was deemed advisable to study the rare-earth compounds which form with the anion if triarbalyllic acid."

X-Ray Analytical Spectroscopy of the Rare Earths

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The term 'rare earths' is the classic name given to the group of elements with atomic numbers 57 to 71. The element yttrium is usually included in this group. The chemical properties of these elements are so strikingly similar that they always occur together in nature and their separation from each other is a singularly difficult task. With but few exceptions, mixtures of these elements have also defied analysis by classical methods of analytical chemistry. Co… more

Magnetic Properties of Some Intra-Rare Earth Alloys

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "Paramagnetic susceptibilities of samarium structure alloys in the systems La-Gd, Nd-Y, Nd-Tm, and Ce-Y were measured from 4.2 - 300°K to determine what effect the formation of this structure has on the magnetic properties of the alloys. Susceptibility maxima were observed in the Nd-Y and Nd-Tm alloys, at 34.5 and 28.5°K, respectively. Slope changes were observed in the curve of 1/x versus T for the La-Gd alloy at 155 and 130°K, and the susceptibility of this a… more

Separation and Spectrophotometric Determination of Rare Earths

Description: Technical report. From Summary : "At the present time arsenazo appears to be widely used for the spectrophotometric determination of rare earths. Unfortunately, the method is not selective. The separation of rare earths and yttrium from interfering elements has been studied, and the following method has been proposed. Rare earths are precipitated as fluorides using fluorides using calcium fluoride as the carrier. Thorium and zirconium are removed by extraction with thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA)… more

A Study of the Rare Earth Metal Propionate Complexes

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The first two successive formation constants of the trivalent rare earth metals with the proportionate ligand were determined by a potentiometric method. A comparison was made of the trends in the stability constants of the proportionate ligand as one proceeds through the rare earth series with the trends observed for several other ligands. Attempts to explain some of the trends have been summarized."

High Purity Calcium

Description: Technical report. From Introduction : "For more than a century, methods employed in preparing calcium were based largely on electrowinning and the most successful were based on [Sir Humphrey] Davy's process. ... In general, the metal was of adequate quality for the industrial applications of the time, and although by 1940 some strides had been made in the purification of calcium, interests in the better grades of the metal were limited essentially to experimental work of academic concern."

An Experimental Approach to a Simplified Band Structure of the Rare Earth Metals

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "A number of the physical properties from which we can obtain both direct and indirect information concerning the band structures of metals, have been measured for most of the rare earth metals. It was thought that it would be desirable to review ans examine these data and try to tie them together. For this purpose the very low and room temperature heat capacities, Hall coefficients, magnetic susceptibilities, spectral data and electrical resistivities were exa… more

The Y-Nd and Sc-Nd Phase Systems

Description: Technical report. From Introduction : "In a recent study by Spedding, et al. on some rare earth alloy systems, an intermediate phase was found to form when a light rare earth (ABAC stacking) was alloyed with a heavy rare earth (ABAC stacking). This intermediate phase was found to have the structure of samarium metal with the stacking ABABCBCAC and was designated "delta". Since the cause of this rather unusual structure occurring in either samarium metal or these alloys is not known the study of… more

Description: From Abstract : "The solubilities of the individual rare earth lactates and α-hysroxyisobutyrates in water at 20 and 60° were determined for comparison with the rare earth glycolate solubilities determined earlier."

The Distribution of Plutonium Tracer Bwetween Metals and Their Molten Halides : VIII. Distributio of Plutonium Tracer in the Cerium-Cerium Bromide System

Description: The resemblance in certain respects of plutonium to the rate earths, especially neodymium, makes it of some interest to extend the studies of the high temperature oxidation-reduction relations of plutonium tracer in metal-metal halide systems to one of the rare-earths.

Precise Lattice Parameters of Selected Rate Earth Tetra- and Hexa-Borides

Description: The refractory tetraborides and hexaborides of seven of the rare earth elements have been prepared by heating intimate mixtures of the sesquioxide and boron in a high vacuum in tantalum, molybdenum, or granite crucibles. Preparatory procedures were varied until single phase samples were obtained. The samples were analyzed by chemical and x-ray diffraction procedures. Precise lattice parameters of the samples were obtained by analytical extrapolation using a digital computer. Some new phases of … more
