Test requirements of TP 400 were extracted from the Kilowatt Isotope Power System, Ground Demonstration System Test Plan.

Description: The purpose of this test was to demonstrate that the pump utilized for the developmental program to be conducted on the Kilowatt Isotope Power System (KIPS) fulfilled the requirements of Test Procedure 398A, Component Test Procedure for the Ground Demonstration System Pump. The results of the tests are reported. From these results it was concluded that the pump for the Kilowatt Isotope Power System has satisfactorily completed the requirements of Sundstrand Pump Test Procedure, TP 398A.

Ir/PuO/sub 2/ compatibility: transfer of impurities from plutonium dioxide to iridium metal during high temperature aging

Description: Plutonium oxide fuel pellets for powering radioisotopic thermoelectric generators for NASA space vehicles are encapsulated in iridium which has been grain-boundary-stabilized with thorium and aluminum. After aging for 6 months at 1310/sup 0/C under vacuum, enhanced grain growth is observed in the near-surface grains of the iridium next to the PuO/sub 2/. Development and characterization of an improved Ir--0. 3% W alloy for space radioisotopic heat sources

Description: An Ir--0.3% W alloy has been doped with minor alloying additions to develop an improved cladding material for space radioisotopic heat sources operating at temperatures to 1450/sup 0/C.
