The Detection of Short Circuits in Thermocouples by a Radio-Frequency Measurement of Inductance

Description: Abstract: "The development of a portable battery-operated instrument capable of detecting a short-circuit four or more inches from the hot junction of a five-foot-long thermocouple is described. Integrated Predictive Models for ICRF-Edge Plasma Interactions

Description: The coupling of radiofrequency waves to the edge plasma of a fusion device produces strong nonlinear interactions with the plasma and surrounding material walls which must be controlled in order to protect the antenna and to obtain efficient heating of the core plasma. The goal of the STTR project was to develop the first quantitative numerical simulation of this problem. This report describes the results of the Phase I work by Lodestar and ORNL on this project.

Transient beam loading in the ALS harmonic RF system

Description: We report on the commissioning of a higher harmonicradiofrequency system at the Advanced Light Source, designed to improvethe beam lifetime. We have achieved an increase above a factor of two inour best results up to now. Transient beam loading of the harmoniccavities, due to the unequal fill patterns, creates the greatestlimitation on lifetime improvement. We also describe several interestingeffects on the operation of the longitudinal and transverse multibunchfeedback system.

Internal Bunching in the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS)

Description: Four methods of rebunching protons within Brookhaven's AGS are discussed. The first method involving switching off the old r-f and switching on the new r-f simultaneously with the new r-f increasing adiabatically seems impractical. Two other methods utilize gradual removal of the old r-f voltage and introduction of the new r-f voltage, or the reverse. Removal of the old r-f voltage followed by introduction of the new seems to give the best results. Several phase diagrams are included. (D.C.W.)

The rf experimental program in the fermilab mucool test area

Description: The rf R&D program for high-gradient, low frequency cavities to be used in muon cooling systems is underway in the Fermilab MUCOOL Test Area. Cavities at 805 and 201 MHz are used for tests of conditioning techniques, surface modification and breakdown studies. Synchronization of x-ray pulses to the pump laser in an ultrafast x-ray facility

Description: Accurate timing of ultrafast x-ray probe pulses emitted from a synchrotron radiation source with respect to a pump laser exciting processes in the sample under study is critical for the investigation of structural dynamics in the femtosecond regime. The Rf System of the Bevatron

Description: Report discussing details of the design for the Bevatron at the University of California Radiation Laboratory. The Bevatron is a "6-billion-electron-volt (Bev) proton synchotron. This device will receive a 10-million-electron-volt (Mev) proton beam from a linear accelerator, and further accelerate a reasonable percentage of these protons, at a nominally constant radius of 600 inches, to a final energy greater than 6 Bev."

Characteristics of a RF-Driven Ion Source for a Neutron Generator Used For Associated Particle Imaging

Description: We present recent work on a prototype compact neutron generator for associated particle imaging (API). API uses alpha particles that are produced simultaneously with neutrons in the deuterium-tritium (2D(3T,n)4 alpha) fusion reaction to determine the direction of the neutrons upon exiting the reaction.
