Collection of Solid Debris on NIF for Radiochemical Diagnostics and Measurements

Description: A system for collecting solid, post-explosion debris samples from the NIF chamber and their subsequent radiochemical analysis is currently under development. If the debris that condenses out of the plasma can be collected and analyzed, the number and type of nuclear reactions that occurred in the capsule material can be determined. this has applications both for radiochemical diagnostics of NIF capsule performance as well as radiochemical measurements relevant to basic science and stockpile ste… more

Sampling of scavenged waste

Description: Sampling and analysis of scavenged waste is necessary to determine if the settled supernate is suitable for disposal to ground and to make corrections in pretreatment of the waste with minimum delay if unsuitable supernate is being produced. From experience to date with TBP waste scavenging and initial first cycle waste scavenging, which are generally similar, the procedures discussed in this report for sampling, analysis, and reporting of results for these two wastes are recommended to fulfill… more

Analysis of Tank 48H Samples HTF-E-04-049 and HTF-E-04-050

Description: Due to the need for additional HLW storage, successful disposition of the material in Tank 48H and return of the tank to routine service are two critically needed activities. As an initial step in the process, SRNL compositionally characterized the components of the Tank 48H slurry. A nominal Tank 48H Tank 48H slurry sample was collected on August 23, 2004 (HTF-E-04-049 and HTF-E-04-050). The August 23, 2004 sample contained approximately 2 Liters of Tank 48H slurry. This document provides the … more

Chemical and radiochemical background concentrations of geologic materials beneath Fermilab

Description: This document consists of a group of tables containing chemical and radiochemical analytical results of samples of geologic materials at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The results are for materials from ground surface to approximately 375 feet below ground surface. The results are from materials obtained from previously undisturbed areas and represent background values. Material for analyses were taken from boreholes drilled as part of the NuMI ground water monitoring network.
