Effect of fuel recycling on radioactivity and thermal power of high-level wastes

Description: The radioactivity and thermal power of high-level and plutonium-bearing wastes from the nuclear fuel cycle have been calculated for the years 1975 to 2005 using the rate of generation of such wastes projected for the Generic Environmental Statement on Mixed Oxide Fuel (NUREG-0002). Description: Radioactivities in materials onboard the returned Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) satellite have been studied by a variety of techniques. Among the most powerful is low-background Ge-semiconductor detector gamma-ray spectrometry, illustrated here by results obtained at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's (LBL) Low Bakground Facilities, in a multi-laboratory collaboration coordinated by Dr. Thomas Parnell's team at the Marshall Spacecraft Center, Huntsville, Alabama.

Stability of plutonium contaminated sediments in the Miami--Erie Canal. [Mound Facility, Ohio, radioactive effluents monitoring]

Description: This study was conducted to evaluate the stability of plutonium-contaminated sediment in the Miami-Erie Canal. Correlations were sought to relate concentrations at air sampling stations to plutonium-238 concentrations in air and stack emissions, wind direction, particulate loading, rainfall, and construction activities. Indoor concentrations of radon 222 and its daughters: sources, range, and environmental influences

Description: The author here reviews what is presently known about factors affecting indoor concentrations of radon 222 and its daughters. Proposal of physics with exotic beams at Oak Ridge

Description: A facility to produce proton-rich radioactive beams for nuclear structure and astrophysics experiments is proposed. This Oak Ridge Exotic Beam (OREB) facility is based on two existing accelerators. Beams of mass up to 80 can be accelerated to energies of about 5 MeV/nucleon. Description: Subsurface waters at Maxey Flats are anoxic systems with high alkalinity and high concentrations of dissolved ferrous ion.
