Progress in Airborne Radioactivity Surveying

Description: From abstract: The objectives in the investigation of airborne radioactivity surveying during fiscal year 1951 were: 1) Establishment of a routine technique of airborne radioactivity surveying -- completed by incorporating those phases of the aeromagnetic surveying technique that were applicable; 2) Development of automatic correction of the radiation measurement for variation in distance from source -- achieved by using the radar altimeter output to modify the output of the counting-rate meter in accordance with the observed variation of radiation intensity with distance from a source; 3) Development of more efficient radiation detectors -- including large scintillation detectors.

Airborne Radioactivity Surveys in Geologic Exploration

Description: The following report describes the use of airborne radioactivity surveying and analytical techniques in geologic exploration by examples of the analysis or evaluation of airborne data related to specific geologic settings. The airborne radioactivity surveying program was begun in 1949 by the U.S. Geological Survey to assist in uranium exploration.

Uranium Series Disequilibrium in Radioactive Ores

Description: From introduction: The purposes of this paper are to tabulate and discuss the results of a number of complete disequilibrium analyses, to illustrate a proposed classification of disequilibrium patterns, to study these disequilibria as clues to the understanding of the geochemical history of the samples and of the deposits, and to point out some of the difficulties when simply comparing radioactivity and chemical uranium assays for interpreting equilibrium or disequilibrium in samples.

Preliminary Report on Methods of Analysis for very Small Percentages of Uranium

Description: Abstract: Procedures are presented in detail of two methods for the determination of very small percentages or uranium (down to 0.0025). The methods are applicable to a wide variety of materials. Notes on the methods and confirmatory experiments are also given.

Airborne Radioactivity Surveys for Phosphate in Florida

Description: Introduction: Deposits of phosphate in Florida, located beyond the limits of known producing areas, have been reported by prospectors and mining companies. Much of the information has been based upon prospecting and exploration which was undertaken many years ago and as a result the published data relating to the occurrence of these deposits are fragmentary, and few details relating to specific locations and extent are available.

An Investigation of Airborne Radioactivity Anomalies in the Rock Corral Area, San Bernardino County, California

Description: From abstract: The investigation in the Rock Corral area was undertaken to determine the relationship between 1) the anomalously high radioactivity recorded during an airborne survey and 2) the distribution and mineralogic mode of occurrence of radioactive material.

U.S. Geological Survey Research in Radioactive Waste Disposal--Fiscal Year 1981

Description: Abstract: The report summarizes progress on geologic and hydrologic research related to the disposal of radioactive wastes. The research is described according to whether it is related most directly to (1) high-level and transuranic wastes; (2) low-level wastes, or (3) uranium mill tailings. Included is research applicable to the identification and geohydrologic characterization of waste-disposal sites, to investigations of specific sites where wastes have been stored, and to studies of regions or environments where waste-disposal sites might be located. A significant part of the activity is concerned with techniques and methods for characterizing disposal sites and studies of geologic and hydrologic processes related to the transport and (or) retention of waste radionuclides.

Geologic Evaluation of Uranium in Plutonic Rocks, Northwestern Arizona: Status Report

Description: From introduction: This report is a status report to complete present contract obligations and is submitted in lieu of a Final Report. A Final Report is not feasible especially until complete analyses and statistical treatment of all of the 436 rock chip, 2 soil-rock and 90 water samples, a total of 528 samples submitted by the partners to Union Carbide, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, plus remaining analyses to be run by BFEC's Grand Junction Laboratory become available and other recommendations and necessities are done. See subsequent section of this report titled: "Recommendations For Work Needed to Complete Final Report". A Final Report may be prepared by the partners if supplemental funds for such work and for completion of the analyses and their statistical treatment ever become available.

Preliminary Report of the Uranium Favorability of Shear Zones in the Crystalline Rocks of the Southern Appalachians

Description: From summary: Three sheared areas in the crystalline Piedmont and Blue Ridge provinces, from which uranium occurrences or anomalous radioactivity have been reported, were studied to determine their favorability for uranium mineralization. The study, which involved a literature review, geologic reconnaissance, ground radiometric surveys, and sampling of rock outcrops for petrographic and chemical analyses, indicates that more-detailed investigations of these and similar areas are warranted.
