The Ratio of Alpha to Beta Activity of Natural Atmospheric Radioactivity

Description: Abstract: The alpha to beta ratio of naturally occurring radioactivity in the air has been investigated. The study has concerned itself primarily with radon daughter products collected on filter-paper samples from the time equilibrium has been established on the paper through elapsed times during which radioactive counting is normally accomplished. Calculations showing the change in this ratio of activities during the above period are presented. From this work it appears that the observed constancy of ratio does have theoretical justification and that departures in alpha-to-beta ratio would be a usable approach to the detection of long-lived alpha or beta radioisotopes in the atmosphere.

Airborne Radioactivity Surveys for Phosphate in Florida

Description: Introduction: Deposits of phosphate in Florida, located beyond the limits of known producing areas, have been reported by prospectors and mining companies. Much of the information has been based upon prospecting and exploration which was undertaken many years ago and as a result the published data relating to the occurrence of these deposits are fragmentary, and few details relating to specific locations and extent are available.

Airborne Radioactivity Surveys in Geologic Exploration

Description: The following report describes the use of airborne radioactivity surveying and analytical techniques in geologic exploration by examples of the analysis or evaluation of airborne data related to specific geologic settings. The airborne radioactivity surveying program was begun in 1949 by the U.S. Geological Survey to assist in uranium exploration.

Progress in Airborne Radioactivity Surveying

Description: From abstract: The objectives in the investigation of airborne radioactivity surveying during fiscal year 1951 were: 1) Establishment of a routine technique of airborne radioactivity surveying -- completed by incorporating those phases of the aeromagnetic surveying technique that were applicable; 2) Development of automatic correction of the radiation measurement for variation in distance from source -- achieved by using the radar altimeter output to modify the output of the counting-rate meter in accordance with the observed variation of radiation intensity with distance from a source; 3) Development of more efficient radiation detectors -- including large scintillation detectors.

Environmental Radiation Measurements in the Southeastern, Central and Western United States, 1962-1963

Description: Report describing the use of a 5" x 3" NaI(Tl) detector and a high pressure ionization chamber to obtain gamma ray spectra and total gamma dose rates at approximately 100 locations during the course of several survey trips in the southeastern, central, and western United States. Reasonably precise elements of the dose rates are made using the pulse height spectra and relatively simple methods of analysis. Total terrestrial dose rates as well as the partial dose rates from the uranium-238 series, thorium-232 series, potassium-40, zirconium-niobium-95, and rhodium-106 are tabulated for each location.

Airborne Radioactivity Surveys for Phosphate in Florida

Description: Report discussing airborne radioactivity surveys, aimed at finding uraniferous phosphate deposits, in ten areas of Florida. A subsequent ground investigation of two radioactivity anomalies out of eight was conducted. Information on radioactivity measurements for each area is given as well as conclusions.

Meson Mass Measurements III : The Pi-Mu Mass Ratio and Energy Balance in Pion Decay

Description: From introduction: "This article constitutes the third of a series of three papers on the "direct" measurements of the meson masses by the "Hp vs. Range" mass ratio method...The study here reported is a logical extension of the pion-proton mass ratio technique."
