USAEC Airborne Radiometric Reconnaissance in Arkansas, Colorado, Montana, Texas and Utah, 1952 to 1955

Description: From introduction: This is one of a series of three reports on airborne radioactivity surveys in the United States. The reports contain the 185 airborne anomaly maps issued by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission as a result of the AEC's aerial surveying program conducted from March 1952 to June 1956; two ground reconnaissance maps of Utah also are included. Most of the reconnaissance was done in the western United States.

Geologic and Radiometric Reconnaissance Along the San Juan and Colorado Rivers Between Mexican Hat, Utah, and Lees Ferry Arizona

Description: Abstract: Ten days were spent during June 1955, examining the sedimentary rocks along the San Juan and Colorado Rivers between Mexican Hat, Utah, and Lee's Ferry, Arizona. The most favorable area for uranium deposits occurs in the Shinarump member of the Chinle formation between Clay Hills Crossing and Spencer Camp along the San Juan River. Mineralization is spotty and deposits are small and almost all below ore-grade. Only one small mine, the Whirlwind, is currently producing ore. Gray-green alteration of the underlying Moenkopi is moderately developed in the vicinity of the Whirlwind mine; elsewhere alteration is weakly developed.

Report on airborne radioactivity surveys and the uranium deposits in the Red River region of Texas and Oklahoma

Description: The U. S. Atomic Energy Commission conducted an airborne radioactivity survey of the Red River region of Texas and Oklahoma beginning in December 1955 and ending in May 1956. All or parts of Archer, Clay, and Montague Counties in northern Texas and Carter, Cotton, Jefferson, and Stephens Counties in southern Oklahoma were surveyed. Particular attention was paid to those areas where exposures are found of red beds of the Permian Wichita Group. Field examinations were conducted of anomalies discovered by airborne reconnaissance as well as those reported by private individuals. Forty localities were examined, the majority in sandstones, siltstones, or conglomerates. Uranium and copper minerals were identified at several localities. Ferruginous staining, bleaching of the sandstone color, calcium carbonate cement, and carbonized plant remains are common to the deposits

Airborne Reconnaissance Project, Ruby Range and Sweetwater Basin, Montana

Description: Abstract: A low-level airborne radioactivity survey of parts of Beaverhead and Madison Counties in southwestern Montana was undertaken from June 6 to October 14, 1955. Flying centered around the Ruby Range-Sweetwater Basin area and concentrated on the Precambrian metamorphic complex and Tertiary lake-bed sediments. No commercial uranium deposits were discovered, and no extensions were found of the few known small occurrences. Five areas of high background detected through the survey were investigated on the ground.

Interim Report on Exploration in the Yellow Cat Area, Grand County, Utah

Description: From introduction: This report summarizes the results of diamond-drill and wagon-drill exploration by the U. S. Geological Survey in the Yellow Cat area from October 9, 1951, to May 22, 1952. The Yellow Cat area is about 10 miles southeast of Thompsons, Grand County, Utah. It is accessable by two graded roads which leave U. S. Highway 50 at points 5 miles east of Thompsons and 7 miles west of Cisco, Utah. A sampling plant and purchasing depot, belonging to the United States Vanadium Co., is at Thompsons. The explored ground includes about 8 square miles principally in T. 22 S., R. 22 E., and the northern part of T. 23 S., R. 22 E., Salt Lake meridian (fig. 1). Altitudes in the area range from about 4, 600 feet to 5, 100 feet (datum is assumed but is approximately correct), and the relief is moderate.

Reconnaissance for Trace Elements in North Dakota and Eastern Montana

Description: From abstract: A reconnaissance for sources of radioactive material in North Dakota and eastern Montana was made in 1948. This reconnaissance was followed by a more detailed survey of parts of Golden Valley and Slope counties, southwestern North Dakota, in June 1949. The radioactivity of representative sections of all formations known to be exposed in the area and of three manganiferous spring deposits was determined with portable Geiger-Mueller counters. At 86 localities 82 samples were taken of these formations and also of 10 ground and surface waters.
